What we’re about
Decatur Makers is a welcoming, family-friendly community of inquisitive, motivated people who work together in a safe environment to discover, understand, design and create interesting things. We do host activities for children, but please note that any children present at a Meetup must be supervised by a parent or guardian.
We also have a google group and are on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram which we use to communicate and discuss activities. More info (and others ways to support us) here.

DECATURMAKERS.ORGBack by popular demand, Chris and Bill's Basics of Speaker Design and Construction Class returns to the space Thursday and Friday, May 23rd and 24th.This will be the 9th time this class has been offered and this will be a very special class - one lucky student will be the 100th graduate (!) and we will build the 200th (!!) speaker in this class!.
Come learn the basics of speaker design then build your very own pair of speakers which you can take home and enjoy! There is a pair of the same speakers you'll be building in the eshop, come get a demo if you like.
The class runs two consecutive nights from 7pm - 9pm each night. Thursday the 23rd is classroom night. We begin with a discussion of sound, what it is, how it relates to human hearing and to speakers. Then we'll learn about the basics of a speaker, what kinds there are, what goes into them and the how's and why's of selecting components. We will finish the evening by gluing up your speaker boxes in preparation for Friday evening. On Friday, we will prep the boxes, install the components including the crossover which you'll solder yourself. Then we finish up the evening listening to some Pink Floyd on the new speakers that you built yourself!
Cost for the class is $60 which covers the cost of the speaker parts. Children under 14 are welcome but we ask that a parent or guardian be present with them (we've had many parent/child pairs take the class together, couples too!).
