The Washington DC Interactive Debate Series
Details
Hello All,
We-- our meetup group-- is about to create the best debate series in Washington, DC. With all the scholars and policy folks in this town, it's amazing that some group hasn't been able to do this successfully already. We have such a diverse and well-connected membership of 180 people, that we have all the resources and connections we need to make this happen. There will be a specific focus on making these events both fun and thought-provoking.
The assistant organizers and I cannot do this without your help, and the future of this meetup group will be shaped by all of us. Our first large-scale debate will take place on April 20th and we'll be experimenting with a new method of creating interactive debates-- we'd aim to fill the room with 30-40 participants and then walk one block over to Beacon Sky Bar for drinks. Participants will be able to present and defend one debate proposition each.
Agenda for the April 20th Debate:
6:15pm Doors open
6:30pm We begin promptly at 6:30pm (to respect everyone's time)
7:30pm We end on time and walk one block to the Beacon Sky Bar for drinks.
Format for the April 20th Debate:
All participants may choose to present a debate proposition if they wish. Participants do not have to present unless they want to.
Each presenter has two minutes to state their proposition and supporting reasons.
Members of the audience take two minutes to write down short counterpoints on post-it notes. The audience reads its counterpoints and the Post-its are displayed on stage.
The presenter has 2 minutes to respond to as many counterpoints as possible.
Here's how you can help:
Come to the April 20th debate (details below). We have a phenomenal location with a room that is ideal for debates at the Charles Sumner School in downtown DC near Farragut North Metro Station (photos (https://www.meetup.com/DeepDebate/photos/861254/#13830340)).
Send us your ideas for what you'd like to see in this meetup group. What were you hoping it would be when you first signed up?
