What is your background and experience as startup CEO or CTO?

After 15 years working for Occidental Petroleum Corp. in Peru, USA and Colombia (OXY), I started in 1996 an IT company with other 3 managers of OXY that is now one of best known in Peru, in fact we are bussiness partners with ORACLE and SAP, in 2008 I start a second project in the field of Human Resorces working as AK Consultores SAC, the one tha is now managed by my partner. Once arrived to the USA me and my sons begin with a feasibility study and then decided to invest in a wholesale company that started 3 months ago, where I am since July as the CFO.

What are the primary responsibilities of any startup CEO/CTO?

Take good care of two main responsibilities. On one hand, a permanent look to the monthly results comparing the actuals vs. the initial projections and, if possible, maintain the cash flow in blue, specially if the decision is not to work with loans from the financial system, and on the other hand, to constantly look the market and the competitors on order to have a smooth and constant growth within the competitors. From my position as CFO I'm the responsible of these targets and to maintain the Sales and Marketing Mgr. informed about our KPI in a monthly basis. So far, we are below in sales but above in bottom line results. It's important to mention that on top of this duties, the CEO must observe that all the company is using the best known practices in their work.

What topics should this Meetup cover through talks, presentations or panels?

I believe that topics should be around the following: CEO responsibilities to define and control the KPI's of all areas. CTO responsibilities to define and control technical systems, IT security, and well prepared emergency Support Team. Depending on the business the CTO should define the importance of having an in-house team or if the technical systems can be outsourced. Best practices in Human Resources, specially in the field of Staffing, Organization Development, performance review and Training Plan definition, C&B, Retention Plans for Key Employees, policies regarding medical insurance and many other points.

Are you most hoping to meet with CEOs, CTOs or both?

I would like to meet with both and would probably include to other Managers as, Commercial, Finance, etc.

What do you think you might learn from a CEO/CTO Meetup?

I am learning how to make business in the USA, then I have a lot to learn from the local CEO's and CTO's My main objective is to participate in every meetup, specially if Legal matters are going to be discussed.

I'm Juan Valdez, living in Denver since September 2012, to stay. I'm a new entrepenour in Denver after almost 50 years experience working in Peru, my home country, and other countries for international corporations.
