Exploring Goa's Musical Tradition

Music has always been the keeper of tradition. The history, struggles and triumphs of a community are forever preserved in their music. The things, about which one could not speak of, one, could sing, for that is the nature of music.

With colonization and the subsequent introduction of western music in Goa, a new genre evolved, sung in the mother tongue – Konkani. It was a blend of Indian and western musical traditions. The Mando and Dulpod and the smaller category of Dekhni henceforth came to identify a community. It became a distillation almost, of the dichotomous lifestyle of the Goan. A deeper look into the joyful and sometimes wistful tunes reveals a glimpse into the complexity of the Goan identity and way of life. The film tries to present the beauty of the music and explores the stories behind these eternal compositions.

About Ruth Lobo
Ruth Lobo is a documentary filmmaker and editor based in Mumbai. She graduated from the St. Xavier’s College with a B.A. in History after which she ventured into the world of filmmaking. At the Surabhi Foundation, she worked as an assistant on several feature length documentary films for the National Geographic Channel Network. She quit work to attend the National Institute of Design where she completed her masters in Film and Video Communication. Aamchem Cantar is her graduating film.
