Art and Design in the Built Environment

Details

This will be a roundtable conversation around how to build collaborations across design disciplines, with a specific focus on arts collaborations in the built environment. There will be presentations by two DVWM members; artist Neal Parks, and artist Frank Gregory, about their experiences of large scale installations of their artwork in public built environments. Any members who have experience to share in this area (large or small) are most welcome to bring some photographs, or other 7-10 minute presentation of their project or work. Please come and bring your ideas, questions, past project experiences, knowledge, design concepts, and philosophy to this discussion.

Here are some topics for discussion (please add your own):

How do public installations of art transform the environment they inhabit, and the people who experience them? Sharing and discussing approaches to writing proposals for projects. Grant writing. Other approaches to funding collaborative built projects. Experiences from members of designing for specific locations. What are the ways in which your particular discipline could be applied in an architectural setting? What other disciplines would enhance your own discipline in achieving this goal? How do lighting, space configuration, and architectural function affect the necessities of design in your field? In this meetup we will begin a very real discussion about what types of collaborations and projects members might actually wish to initiate, and participate in: how to build them; how to fund them; how, in short, to make it really happen. If you have specific ideas for projects you would like to, or are, pursuing, either on your own, or in a collaboration, this will be an ideal opportunity to bring them to the table. This will be a continuing thread which we will revisit with follow up meetups in the future.

Please consider coming, even if this is not your area of expertise. The richness of this group will thrive on members sharing their combined knowledge across disciplines
