This summer is the 200th Anniversary of the "Battle of Detroit" -- albeit not much of a fight. It might be a good idea if we put a panel together of 3-4 folks who could outline what occured, answer questions, et
I enjoyed the event. There was about 50 people there. The crowd was varied in ages but all interested in history.

Very cool people, very cool bar, very cool discussion. I look forward to the Underground Railroad thing in July.

Everyone is invited to come to Monroe this weekend And attend the River Raisin Muster held in Downtown Monroe. Listen to the music of Cass, Campeau, performed by fife and drum corps across the country, with many from Michigan. Go to the Rover Raisin Mister Facebook Page for more info. Hope to see you there.

Any chance on changing the nights of these meetups to Tuesday or Wednesday? It is a work conflict for me. And it is hard to explain why I have to leave early to go to a drunken meeting :)
June 19
Amy, I'll gladly take/morph parts 2&3, or assist in that regard. No worries. And no problem about keeping it playful -- it is a very interesting topic and I suspect many people will want to weigh in with insights, etc.

There's a marker on the way to Amherstburg about some Skirmishes fought near the River Canard. Here's a link to some history on Fort Amherstburg in the war of 1812 http://www.1812amherstburg.com/...![]()

Hi Amy, I'll take #4. Keeping it playful sounds good...would like to figure some of the details of the presentation: timing, type of presentation, etc. Great news about the CBC too.
June 15
Oh, and the CBC will be there for sure! I've asked to see if their producer will also be a panelist and talk to us about War of 1812 / Siege of Detroit from a Canadian perspective.
June 15
Hi all, sorry for the delay! I've been on deadline for a massive project at work.
Patrick and Ashlee, I would love if you'd both be panelists and your proposed line-up sounds great. I would love for us to make sure we're a little playful in our presentation -- I've found having a beer or two before addressing the group works wonders in this capacity.
Patrick: preference on topic? Ashlee, can we count on you for number 4? I also think we could wrap topics 2 & 3 if we're in a bind.
June 15
Sounds like what we did for Critical Mass, which is the last Friday of every month. I believe over 300 rode it last month. I highly recommend checking it out!
June 8
The advice I give to family when they come to visit me is to throw your bike in your car, park anywhere downtown and pedal to your destination. It's fun, safe, cheap and stress free.
June 6
Amy, I'd be happy to sit as a panelist. We might consider a gang of four, with topics generally arranged as (1) Detroit pre-war history; (2) U.S./world events leading to up war; (3) Detroit/Canadian actions during war; (4) remainder of war/Treaty of Ghent. This breaks it up chronologically and rolls out events in a continuum that might make sense to the listener; it's also easier to divide up amongst panelists. Your thoughts, please.

David - the date has been changed to Thursday, June 21. New location is Anchor Bar.
May 30
Are we no longer meeting on 13-Jul? Please confirm as my guest from Florida will be here in July.
May 29
Confirmed the Anchor Bar. Confirmed the CBC. Confirmed Thursday, June 21, pending a quick double-check of the Anchor Bar event calendar. Next step: Confirming some panelists! I'll get right on it! This will be a GREAT one, Detroit drunken historians!

on average 40% of meetup RSVPs show up, so it is reasonable to expect about 40 people.
Caucus Bar closes at 8 pm or 9 pm, depending.
Not sure about the details of Anchor Bar.
May 19, 2012
Stroke of brilliance: What if we did it somewhere on the site of Fort Detroit?
Present day, that site is bounded by Fort Street, Cass Ave., Congress, and Griswold.
Maybe the Caucus Club, in the Penobscot? (Kind of a strange place, but it's usually pretty empty.) Or the Anchor Bar, behind the Fort Shelby Hotel?
Just a couple of ideas in case Jacoby's is too tight a squeeze for us.
May 15, 2012
Jacoby's is probably big enough for our purposes, unless we start getting huge numbers/RSVPs, in which case we would need to swap it out. Maybe the Silverdome....
May 15, 2012
Does anybody realize how small Jacoby's is ?
We used to do some band things and at 50 people you could no longer get up the stairs ...
There are some interesting Downriver spots - if anybody wants to tie this in with a visit to Monroe ?

There were two wars of 1812. One is mentioned here and another made famous by Tchaikovsky's 1812. Emperor of West clashed Emperor of East.
May 14, 2012
so as not to confuse the 1812 event planning with the book club thing, i started a separate thread for us to brainstorm the details over here: http://www.meetup.com/Detroit-D...![]()
May 14, 2012
A book club is a great idea. The book is "The Civil War of 1812", written by Alan Taylor (2002). Brian has included a link to Amazon to purchase the book if you are interested. Let's allow a few weeks for folks to read the book and then meet over drinks to discuss, maybe in June. We could also then discuss planning for an 1812-related event.
May 14, 2012
I'm up for this book club idea, though I've found it hard to read after drink or two sometimes.
May 14, 2012
Phoebe, you should check out the Tashmoo Beer Garden this weekend (opening weekend), in the West Village. That would be a great 'welcome' to the area.
May 14, 2012
Jacobys has an upstairs I think... Could be a cool meeting spot!
May 13, 2012
Hey Detroit! Moving from Lower East Side tomorrow at 8am.... And will arrive on Wednesday! So excited to meet up and make new, crazy fun friends!
May 13, 2012
hello guys! Just a little piece of something. I originally grew up in Ogdensburg ,NY Whi.ch is on the Saint Lawrence River. Every year they do archeological digs, many uniform buttons, musscatballs etc. Directly across in full view is Fort Wellington..Heres a link if interested. Thanks!

i started reading The Civil War of 1812. It focuses on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence river valley during the War of 1812. it's a great read so far. anyone else interested in reading it and doing a drunken book club thing with it on the side?

Ralph Naveaux already wrote a book on this. If you can get him, he is the expert the national park deferred to.

Might want to visit River Raisin Battlefield, nation's newest national park in Monroe where bloodiest battle of War of 1812 took place. Visitors center offers short video & there are markers throughout Monroe. David Ingall, who cowrote Michigan Sites Significant to the Civil War w/me is an expert on this topic and might be able to speak. Also, on the old Hull Hwy (Jefferson) a marker stands at Eliz Park marking Battle of Mongaguan (I believe) & another marker standsoutside Lake Erie Metro Park.

I love the idea of getting the CBC crew -- along with other interested fans and students of this aspect of Detroit's history -- involved in this project. The 200th Anniversary gives us a relevant and timely opening for such a panel (and perhaps a related article or two). We will need to organize this event, and I suggest a meeting o'er drinks to do just that.
2 · May 11, 2012
Also, I'd be interested in helping plan this or any other events, if you need any help.
1 · May 9, 2012
My former professor is putting together a conference and book on this topic with some of his students. If you want I can pass this along to him. Maybe some of his students would be interested in speaking.
