Since I have created this group I have been amazed at how many people are interested in and play mahjong. I started this group not really thinking it would go anywhere, but have been pleasantly surprised! We are currently at 49 members, and although we don't have anywhere near that many people coming regularly we do have a good group of regulars. Members have taken it upon themselves to start meetups in their areas, and so far the results have been great. In the past year, this group has really taken off and I am happy to be a part of it.
First let me say that I will never charge to join this group or to go to a meet. I know what it's like to be low on cash, and I believe that money should not be necessary to have fun and meet people. On January 2nd organizer dues for the meetup group are due. Meetup.com charges $72 for every 6 months. I have no problem footing the bill for this. The good times and the friends I have made are well worth the money. That being said, any help I could get toward offsetting this fee would be greatly appreciated. I have absolutely no expectations, this is purely a donation thing. If you enjoy what this group provides and have a little extra $$$ to help out with this fee, please feel free to do so. Any little bit helps, but please do not feel pressured.
On the main meetup page there is now a "donation" section on the left sidebar, underneath the "featured meetup." From there you can donate via Paypal, or you can just give it to me in cash next time you see me.
Thank you for helping to make this group a success! I hope that we can continue growing, meeting new people, and of course playing Mahjong!
This group is for anyone that enjoys playing, or would like to learn how to play mahjong. This is different than the tile matching game that you may have seen on the computer, but is more akin to rummy. For info on how to begin playing mahjong of any style, check out http://mahjong.wikidot.com/basic-rules. Both beginners and adept players are welcome. Most of the currently scheduled games are for Riichi (Japanese) mahjong, however if there is a certain style you would like to play (Taiwanese, American, etc), let me know and we will try to arrange a game. You can also use the "Suggest a Meetup" feature to schedule something yourself. There are currently lots of people lurking, you never know who may be interested!
