Today is the 4-year Anniversary of the creation of Dinner for 8. It’s amazing how quickly four years went by. It seemed like yesterday that I decided to start the group. I still have fond memories of the first couple events, even that dinner in which everyone was a no-show. It took five events before we got our first full dinner for 8. We have definitely grown over the years. We just reached the 2,000th member mark.
As I reflect back, I experienced a range of emotions from laughter to sadness. I have made numerous lifelong friends through the group. It’s funny to think having lived in Los Angeles for 30+ years, I did not find a more genuine circle of people until I started Dinner for 8. My goal has always been to connect the Asian American community one member and one event at a time. Regardless of what you may have heard, Dinner for 8 stands for quality; quality of events, quality of members, and quality of experience.
For the members I haven’t had met yet, feel free to come up to me at the events. I won’t bite. I’m just a regular dude who’s also trying to figure things out. Besides, I always find it fascinating to meet the new members. Everyone is here for a reason and I want to hear your story. We are not strangers; we are just friends who haven’t been introduced yet.
For the members who's been with Dinner for 8 since the beginning, thank you. My fondest memories are from the first year. It was amazing watching our growth to become what we are today. I am going to remember the difficulties of starting a Meetup group. I am going to remember the 6th-month and 1st-year parties and the first Soiree. I am going to remember the friendships being formed; when people first met. I am going to remember a lot.
For the members that I have personally met, interacted, hung out, and shared life stories with, you have changed the course of my life in ways you can’t even imagine. I am a completely different person now. And I hope that I also left a positive mark on your life as well. I consider you a part of my community, my family.
This year will usher in an evolution for Dinner for 8 - it’s going to be a fun ride. Stay tuned.
From the bottom of my <3,
