Virtually all health professionals extol the benefits of walking. Our niche is for women interested in improving their level of fitness. We promote fun and yes, we get dirty. Really dirty sometimes because we train on hills and trails. If you are looking for fun and good company combined with a training program that focuses on becoming a stronger and faster walker, then this is the one. I have been the Organizer for this group on and off since I first started it in 2006. Prior to that I was doing distance training had become an assistant coach with the West Coast Road Runners, (an excellent group that meets on Saturday mornings). I also had done race walking with Walk 2 Win on Sunday mornings (another excellent group if you're are interested in race walking). I found that I needed more hill training to do the distance events in Catalina, so I started my own walking group, The Dirty Girls Club. (Now one moment to explain that although we are the Dirty Girls, I welcome any guests regardless of gender. There is no fee either way, I do this solely for the love of walking with company.)
SAN DIEGO HALF MARATHON AT PETCO PARK
Four of us did the Inaugural San Diego Half Marathon at Petco Park on March 11, 2012 after 4 months of training. We all had a fantastic day. Two of our Dirty Girls did their first half marathon, and we all really enjoyed the course as well.
For walkers we were one strong and fast gaggle of gals. Our hill training (Cornish Hills and Quail Hollow) had paid off. We Dirty Girls had an especially easy time going up the Washington Avenue/University Avenue Hill on the route just before 15 Km. Our paces at 15Km had hardly slowed down from the earlier, flatter part of the course. Now THAT felt really good. :-) We all had a strong finish. We all did our best times on the last leg between 15Km (9.32 miles) and the finish line at 13.1 miles.
Several "virgin" half marathoner Dirty Girls enjoyed this experience so much that they set goals for the AFC, America's Finest City Half Marathon in August 2012, and then continued on to many other distance events. They also began running these events.
CARLSBAD HALF MARATHON
This popular half marathon is one of the most scenic and enjoyable in the US, if not the world. Because of the course and the relaxed constraints for a fast finish time, it is perfect for the half marathon "virgin". Come join the Dirty Girl team to train with us if you have your sights set on January 2016.
CATALINA ISLAND HALF MARATHONS
I have done the Catalina Full Marathon in 2007, and since then I've done several Half Marathons that are held on Catalina Island. Much of the hill training I do has made it possible for me to complete a Half Marathon with changing elevations within 3 hours, walking every single step. Some of the Dirty Girls that went with me did a combination of run/walk.
I am restarting this group in January 2015 after a long hiatus due to shoulder problems which primarily kept me from spending much time on the keyboard. I am on the mend now and am ready to get back in shape. This is good news for me and also for beginner walkers as most of my early meetups in 2015 will be an easy to moderate challenge. As I get stronger I will be adding some of my longer and more hilly routes, but I will keep the easier, flatter routes on the calendar. I hope you will all try to join me at some time. It would be nice to have new members join me in my journey to regain my walking fitness.
