Pele, Hawaiian Goddess of the Volcano and Passion
Details
Pele is the Hawaiian Goddess of the Volcano. Her home, Kilauea, is an active volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. The molten lava spewed forth during her eruptions is both destructive and creative. The result is a constantly changing landscape on the Big Island of Hawaii. Because her "fiery" nature can be capricious and damaging, Pele is both respected and feared by Hawaiians. Yet, despite her unpridictable, undisciplined and almost wanton displays of emotions, Pele is both loved and revered. Though Pele is well known, her sister Hi'iaka is less well-known. Hi'iaka is the counterpoint to Pele's fiery nature. She is the guardian of womanly rites and is a healer and brings beauty through the hula and her songs.
Join us and learn about Hawaiian religious traditions, hear several Hawaiian myths of Pele and her sister, Hi'iaka, and discover the paradox of the Pele / Hi'iaka cycle.
