Welcome to the DC edition of the Docker Global Hackday #3!

AGENDA

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE: Think about and plan your hack! Try to network with some other DockerDC members and form your teams ahead of time! Use the description below for more details on the Hackday.

6:00 Arrive, Beer and Pizza.

6:30 Finalize teams and start hacking

7:30 Livestream of Docker presentations.

9:00 Event ends - hacking will continue remotely until Monday, September 21, 9:00 AM PDT

The livestream will kick off with talks by members of the Docker core team, who will share some updates about new features included in the latest release of Docker and how they facilitate the creation and management of distributed applications. Every Docker meetup group (https://docker.com/community/meetups/) and Docker hacker participating will be able to learn about those new features and announcements.

Rules:

As a team of 1-3 hackers, you will hack on a project using Docker as the central piece. You will have exactly from 4pm PDT on Wednesday, September 16th to 9am PDT on Monday, September 21st to complete this project. This window includes the time to create all materials needed for your submission.

Although it is not allowed to start your project before 4pm PDT on Wednesday, September 16th, we strongly encourage everyone to think about project ideas in advance. We will build a page with all the project ideas for everyone to see what ideas have already been submitted and help participants form teams.

Everyone will submit projects in one of three categories listed below:

  1. Docker Plugins
  2. Docker Plumbing – runC (https://github.com/opencontainers/runc), Notary (https://github.com/docker/notary), etc
  3. Docker Freestyle – must use features from Docker 1.7 and above (including experimental binaries).

Submit Your Hack Ideas:

You can submit through this form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1qwx8-jQfHE3EPEa83YcDhnlzpwBSMCkYrmmjv2dNcPc/viewform?usp=send_form) with:

• Hack Title
• Brief abstract [masked] word description)
• Hacker Name
• Best way to contact project lead
• URL describing the project idea
• How can other people help you?

The Docker community will then vote on the best hack in each category in two different ways.

Winners:

  1. Local Docker Meetup winners

A jury composed of Docker Engine core maintainers will vote for the local edition winners from each Meetup group that organized a local edition of the Docker Global Hack Day.

Prizes for the local edition winners will be announced soon.

  1. Global Docker Global Hack Day Winners

We will build a page with all projects and videos for the community to vote for the global winner. Note that Local Docker Meetup winners will be featured on this page.

Voting will be done through social networks – stay tuned for an update on how this voting will work.

The Global winning team will be invited to attend DockerCon Europe (http://europe.dockercon.com/) (conference tickets + accommodations for each member of the winning team).

Connect with the Docker hackers from around the world!

During the day the Docker team (https://www.docker.com/company/team/) and the Docker community will be on IRC helping you hack your project or answering questions about Docker. The official back channel for this event on IRC is #docker (https://kiwiirc.com/client/chat.freenode.net/?nick=guest%7C?#docker).

The official hashtag for the event on Twitter is #dockerhackday (https://twitter.com/search?q=%23dockerhackday&src=typd&f=realtime). Everybody will tweet using this hashtag. You can also follow us on Twitter (https://twitter.com/docker)to receive news real-time during the day.

About Docker

Docker is an open platform for developers and sysadmins to build, ship, and run distributed applications. Consisting of Docker Engine, a portable, lightweight runtime and packaging tool, and Docker Hub, a cloud service for sharing applications and automating workflows, Docker enables apps to be quickly assembled from components and eliminates the friction between development, QA, and production environments.
