Blindsight, an R&D/product firm in Berkeley, CA, is seeking a Lead Developer to build a production version of a remote assistance system for the blind, low-vision, and elderly.
Users of the Blindsight system will get help with activities of daily living via their mobile phone (or similar device), linked to a distributed virtual service call center staffed by professional guides and/or trained volunteers. The system will integrate voice, web, indoor and outdoor navigation, pattern-recognition and call-center technologies.
After successful proof-of-concept field trials and follow-on funding through Federal seed grants, we're ramping up quickly. Since we're a small distributed team at the moment, we prize energy, ingenuity, speed, accuracy, diligence and generally being rewarding to work with. Our expectation is that our team will continue to grow over the course of the year.
Lead Developer for a Rails-based Web/Telco Call Center Application
This is a full-time, permanent position that will report to and work with the Principal Investigator (product manager).
Candidates need not be based in the San Francisco Bay Area, but must be available to work for long periods (weeks to months) with the Bay Area team in person, as needed.
Important: Candidates must have unrestricted authorization to work in the US.
The Lead Developer for the Call Center Application will direct and implement the design and development of the call center system, and will help in recruiting an appropriate development team as necessary. Primary responsibilities will include:
- Main oversight of call-center web application design and development
- Creation and maintenance of project development plans
- Gathering of technical requirements
- Participation in front-end focus groups and other market research
- Selection of appropriate framework, database, security measures, etc.
- Implementation of end-to-end architecture
- Iteratively building and testing the app with other staff and contractors
- Recruiting additional technical staff to fulfill development needs
- Designing and building high-traffic production software systems
- Broad and deep experience with Ruby on Rails, with sizable project(s)
- Resolving scaling issues in hosted apps
- Agile development process
- Scala or Clojure
- EC2/cloud systems
Blindsight offers benefits including 3 weeks' paid vacation, medical and dental insurance, an allowance for corrective lenses and SEP-IRA. Compensation may include opportunities for equity participation. We are an equal opportunity (and generally standard-disclaimer-compliant) employer.
You’ll work with many technologies, wear many hats, help set our direction, and build software intended to make life better for millions. You’ll have a great deal of freedom in how and where the work is done, interact closely with first-rate colleagues who know how to make successful products, and work closely with a beta group of guides and end-users.
You don't have to be an expert in issues faced by the blind, low-vision and elderly. But if you have attention to detail, a desire to learn, and a love of collaboration, we'd love to hear from you. Thanks for considering working with us!
Describe to us why you’re right for this job (or why we should consider you even if you're not!). An accurate resume and pointers to relevant completed projects are welcome at jobs at blindsight.com.

Wanted: Tech Advisor (SeniorLevel ROR engineer bkgrnd) with VP or CTO potential)
Time: 2 hrs/wk (average) for minimum 3-4 months, longer if possible.
Start Date: ASAP
Thumbnail: The position requires someone who has been a senior level Ruby developer, with good management or at least personal communication skills as well. (We have our own PM, who is not a former coder.) You would be advising and ensuring the quality and scalability of code for our two fulltime engineer development team. (We also have a designer and a design advisor.)
WHO WE ARE and WHAT WE WILL DO:
Our mission is to create a robust web application that can help couples (married or in committed relationships) to save (if savable), ensure, and deepen their relationships.
Our startup, based on a successful alpha plus more than 3 years of research and development, has most of the predictors of successful startups. Our market: the 95% of unhappy marriages/ couples in general in the Western Hemisphere who cannot afford or will not trust a marriage therapist, more than 65% of whom in a 2000 person poll (Harris) said they would pay at least $5/wk for what we will be offering if they had issues in their marriage/committed relationship.
WHAT THE SITE DOES: Confidential available with signed NDA, but essentially gives quick and easy tools for couples to use to clarify their issue without blame, and then tools that tap both expert and wisdom of crowds sources processes, information, games, etc to solve the issue.
Other tools will help mates keep agreements, and we can say this will be “making honesty easier than ever before.” Site hopes to launch in 3 phases, with the first one ready in about a month, and iteration frequently thereafter.
We will be using a subscription model to go after this giant blue ocean market, which we will be pioneering.
TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE:
The web app (which includes two mobile derivatives) could not only make lots of money, but prevent oceans of suffering (associated with divorce and unhappy marriages). It has a triple bottom line: the founder also wants most of his own profits to go to help prevent wars, atrocities, and to also prevent further global warming. So it is a rare venture that puts together Love with Justice and the Planet. (The founder has long proven track record in these other areas.)
BTW, anyone who has gone through a tough divorce (or whose parents divorced at a tender age, will probably find this enormously fascinating and gratifying—an opportunity to turn your lemons into lemonade.
TWO MOST IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES: (we welcome more if you want to take them on)
1) To at least QA the code quality and in sure it is dropped at least 3 times per week . OUR team is using GitHub and SliceHost.
2) To ensure that the CEO and PM have access to all the code with no more than a 2 day lagtime, and that all code being used is adequately supported and scalable, at least up to our first 25,000 paid subscribers.
WHAT WE HAVE GOING FOR US: A lot. Once we hear from you, we will send detailed backgrounders. For starters:
> Our BP was one of the finalists in a highly competitive BP competition in the Silicon Valley area/Bay area, and
> We have several creative marketing strategies, including two mobile apps that could catch on fast.
COMPENSATION: would be negotiable, depending on whether you were only helping us as our TA, or could help in other ways through your contacts. Once we are funded, we would naturally be open to almost any other position you wanted that would not conflict with the senior engineer wants. We have at least 4 highly interested investors, awaiting to see the beta.
TO APPLY: Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to make initial contact, and send us your resume. After this we will send you detailed backgrounders on who we are and what we have going for us, to see if you are sufficiently impressed with our potential.
Please also indicate your skype ID

I'm working on a few Ruby on Rails development roles in the Bay Area. I'm interested in speaking with anyone who is looking to make a transition in the near future. If you're not looking, let me know if you have any recommendations.
Placebook.com (Tom DiGrazia - tom DOT degrazia AT placebook DOT com) is looking for either a full-time Rails developer or a consultant to work the new site until he finds a permanent hire. Located in Menlo Park.
"Right now we're building the base product but we really want to do some fun things product-wise. Some of them involve dragging/dropping of elements within the browser and from the desktop to the browser, a trace being drawn/played on a map with various stop/start points and rates, and behind-the-scenes calculations that will help indicate many different things that are geospatial in nature."
I expect much of the work will have to be done on site, but that's obviously open to discussion. He's not interested in head-hunters.
Contact him directly if you're intersted...jon

Opportunity to earn a full-time salary, as well as an equity stake, while working remotely on an innovative project with lots of potential and good odds of success.
Our team is focused on using Artificial Intelligence to help optimize various pursuits like skiing, fishing, dating, live music, nightlife, etc. We've been developing our technology and user experience for over three years and recently released our first product to a targeted audience on the iPhone App Store. The initial response from our users has been overwhelmingly positive. They like what we've built and they want more.
We seek a lead programmer who has the skills and the drive to commit to a start-up effort. You can take comfort in the fact that the project is well-defined with clear-cut deliverables and you'll be working with an experienced team of fun-loving, hard-working individuals.
Our goal is to deploy the iPhone app's user experience in web app form, so people can use it on any platform (not just iOS). You'll be working on a relatively mature Rails app and supporting a growing user base. Most of the functionality already exists in the Rails app. It's just not available to the public yet because it doesn't meet our quality standards.
Your responsibilities will include:
* Develop and deploy key enhancements to the current Rails app within the first 2-3 months.
* Optimize the user experience for mobile browsers.
* Support our growing user base.
* Develop the next generation of our architecture for scaling and expansion into new markets that are adjacent to our core niche.
* Participate in a very short and sweet daily scrum to keep things fresh.
* Take an interest and play an active role in the design and implementation of a world-class user experience.
We need someone who has supported a consumer-oriented project for at least one year. You'll need to show a genuine interest in understanding who our users are, what we're building for them, and why we're building it, so it's beneficial (but not compulsory) if you have a passion for some sort of active pursuit.
* 5+ years of programming experience working on more than one project, at least one of which is a successful consumer-oriented product, that you supported for at least one year.
* Understand the fundamentals of Computer Science (data structures, algorithms, etc.)
* Experience scaling a web-based application.
* Proficient in at least a few other languages, like C or C++.
* Comfortable installing and securing your own Linux environment for both development and production.
It would be nice if you're already comfortable working with stuff that we currently use like Linux, JQuery, AJAX, Google Maps, JSON, RESTful APIs, PivotalTracker, Agile, etc.
If you're interested and qualified, then please send an email to info(at)oowom.com or you can contact us through our job posting at http://www.authenticj...
