  • Mar 20, 2012 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is no longer available

SORRY FOR THE SHORT NOTICE - our speaker was injured at the last minute and will not be able to attend. Hopefully most of you will get this message in time.  We will reschedule for April...jon

Headliner: Eric Theise

6:30 - 7:00:Open mic: get help; strut your stuff

7:00 - 8:15: Featured presentation

8:15 - 8:30: Jobs Offered / wanted / door prizes

Presentation Abstract: It's no secret that browser-based and mobile technologies are combining with server-side APIs to create new and novel mapping experiences. While it's easy for a Rails programmer to add longitude and latitude to a model and render it via a Google map, more challenging geospatial work has typically been accomplished using Python with GeoDjango.

Daniel Azuma's RGeo gem, and his subsequent blog posts, have injected some fresh energy and ease into the prospects of using RoR in geospatial programming. In this presentation, we'll get caught up in this activity by developing a simple application built with RGeo, PostgreSQL w/PostGIS, and the OpenLayers JavaScript mapping library. We'll cover enough geography to steer clear of disaster, and make use of easy, essential add-ons, such as QGIS. Along the way, we'll look at relevant pieces of the FOSS geo-ecosphere, such as OpenStreetMap, GRASS, Mapnik, and others.

Bio: Eric Theise is a software engineer at PINC Solutions, a logistics SaaS provider.

Pre-meetup nosh: We usually meet at the Biryani House (Shattuck @ University) around 5:00pm for snacks and tech talk. Either Rich or Jon will be there... or someone else from the group. Join us if you can and enjoy the food and the discussion.

Bummer. I'm still in SF and wouldn't be out there until 6-6:15. Maybe next time.

If anyone is still headed to Biryani House that would be cool. Also, why not just have the Meetup anyway and do lightning talks, etc.?
