Presentation Abstract
Xiki (http://xiki.org) is an open source project that aims to be the next generation of the shell console. It's implemented in ruby.

Inspired by wiki ideas, it has textual syntaxes for running commands, web development, and controlling other apps. Xiki was recently presented at the SF Rails, East Bay Rails, and Silicon Valley Bleeding Edge Ruby user groups.

Demos during the presentation will include using Xiki to develop Rails and Node.js apps, and extending Xiki to create custom menus. Also interacting with git, mongodb, couchdb, mysql, and running unit tests, as well as controlling the web browser during web development. Xiki has text syntaxes for navigating local and remote file systems and running code, including inside the context of rails apps. You can create general-purpose menu-based user interfaces that are a hybrid between command-line and GUI interfaces (the user can use the mouse and browse nested menus, but the developer only deals with text).

The theory behind Xiki will be covered in addition to the demos.

Craig Muth is the founder of Memorize.com. He relocated to San Francisco a year ago and is the organizer of local ProtoNight.com events, and the creator of dotsies.org.
