http://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/9/4/1/event_23199233.jpegLet's take a nice, short and very scenic hike to the Cedar-Glen Campground! As an added bonus, we will have lunch at the Mt. Baldy Lodge Restaurant after the hike.

This hike is suitable for Advanced Beginners and/or very fit beginners. Certainly, Intermediate hikers who would like to go on a laid back hike are welcome to join us.

The hike starts on the Icehouse Canyon trail at 4900 ft. The lower trail climbs above a bubbling stream that flows over boulders and passes old cabins and cabin ruins. We will hike mostly in shade under a canopy of fir, pine, and cedar trees on the lower trail until we reach the one mile marker. Here, instead of going straight on the Icehouse Canyon trail we will turn left and take the Chapman trail about another 1.2 miles to the Cedar Glen Campground. This is the trail less traveled and we will again hike single track up to the campground. There are a couple of really fine views to take in during this portion of the hike. The Cedar Glen trail camp sits secluded in a bowl-shaped bench under Cedar, Pine and Fir. We will stop to have a snack, and explore the area before heading back out the way we came.

This hike is about 4.5 to 5 miles round trip with about a 1000 to 1100 ft gain and should not pose a problem for those of you who have exercised regularly and have been hiking every week. Though most of the trail is well-maintained, there are some rocky, uneven portions where those who are not sure on their feet may have trouble. We will hike at an easy, moderate pace and take a few breaks to allow slower hikers to catch up and to take time to take pictures. Because it is a short hike, we will not hike at a fast pace, HOWEVER, THIS IS NOT A HIKE FOR A TOTAL BEGINNER WHO HAS NOT EXERCISED IN THE PAST COUPLE OF MONTHS. IF I SEE YOU ARE HAVING DIFFICULTY, YOU WILL BE ASKED TO TURN AROUND.

WHAT TO BRING: At least 1 1/2 to 2 liters of water, snacks, sunhat, sunscreen, dress in layers and wear good trail shoes with tread or hiking boots.

DIRECTIONS: From the East, take the 210 West and get off at Mountain Ave in Upland. Go north (right) on Mountain through San Antonio Heights until you reach Mt. Baldy Road. Go right on Mt. Baldy Rd. and take it all the way through the town of Mt. Baldy and turn right on Icehouse Canyon Road. Do not turn left at the junction toward the ski lifts! Immediately there will be a large parking lot on the left. Park here, then walk up to the solo picnic table near the port-o-pottys. We will meet here. From the West, take the 210 East and get off at Baseline Ave. Go west (left) on Baseline and turn right at Padua which should be the next street. Go straight up Padua and turn right on Mt. Baldy Road. The directions are now the same as coming from the East.

Warning- The icehouse canyon trail head parking lot fills up fast on the weekends. Plan to get to the parking lot by 7:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. at the latest! A valid adventure pass must be displayed in your windshield to park here.

Carpooling is highly recommended. Please post whether you want to car pool in the comment section.
