The second annual Effective Altruism Summit will take place from July 27- August 2. We are now accepting applications through the Summit website: www.effectivealtruismsummit.com
Effective altruism is a growing intellectual movement that uses evidence and reason to identify the most effective ways of improving the world. This approach often involves reframing the problem in order to get at less conventional and less obvious solutions. For example, if you want to improve the lives of the poor, society tells you to do something like join the Peace Corps. But in fact it may be more effective to work on Wall Street for two years, earn hundreds of thousands of dollars, and give most of it to a charity proven to save lives.
The Summit is largest annual gathering of the effective altruism movement. This year’s conference will be in two parts: a 5-day retreat for committed effective altruists looking to hone their strategy skills and make connections with like-minded people, and a 2-day conference for anyone interested in learning more about effective altruism and being part of the largest annual gathering of the community. The weekend conference will be a mixture of presentations, interactive workshops and social time. Speakers include:
Peter Thiel, Thiel Foundation, co-founder of PayPal
Holden Karnofsky, co-founder of Givewell
Max Tegmark, co-founder of the Future of Life Institute, professor at MIT
Members of the following organizations will be in attendance: Machine Intelligence Research Institute; GiveWell; Centre for Effective Altruism; 80,000 Hours; Giving What We Can Center for Applied Rationality & Leverage Research.
