Registration Required
Registration is $10 in advance or $15 at the door, and registration is required to RSVP here on Meetup. The primary goal of this event is NOT just to watch TED Talks videos. We can all do that for free at home. The primary goal of this event is to meet great people, and charging even a tiny amount like $10 immediately improves the quality of the people who attend. The money is used to pay for the facility, the sound system and some snacks at the event itself.
Proposed Agenda
This event is all about TED Talks. We'll be watching three (3) TED Talks, selected by members ahead of time, and discussing them as a group. Here is the ~rough~ agenda for the event:
7:00 to 7:10 - Welcome and Opening Announcements
7:10 to 7:30 - TED Talk #1
7:30 to 8:00 - Open Discussion and Networking
8:00 to 8:20 - TED Talk #2
8:20 to 8:50 - Open Discussion and Networking
8:50 to 9:10 - TED Talk #3
9:10 to 9:30 - Open Discussion and Networking
Open Discussion
When you arrive, you will receive a standard playing card from a deck of cards. During the first Open Discussion break, you will be encouraged to split up according to 'hearts', 'diamonds', 'clubs' and 'spades'. Participation is voluntary. During the second Open Discussion break, you'll be encouraged to split up according to the number on your card. The point is to get people to meet each other.
Meeting People & Networking
We have three objectives for these meetings, including (1) learning from the smartest minds on the planet, (2) talking about big ideas and (3) meeting like-minded people. The Open Discussion breaks are designed to get everyone to meet each other. Also, most 'networking' groups are difficult because people don't always know what to talk about with each other. In this group, we'll be watching these incredible and inspiring videos, hopefully spurring plenty of discussion among attendees.
NOTE: Location
Please note that there are two (2) different location for The Port Workspace in Oakland. This event is being held at 317 Washington in Jack London Square. We will be on the third floor.
Food and Beverage
We will have some snacks at the event but it won't constitute dinner for anyone, so please eat something before you arrive. There are plenty of food options in the area and we won't start the first TED Talk video until 7:00 PM.
