This book club will cover great literary works such as Hemingway, Dickens, Shelley, Bronte, Milton, to more recent authors like...humm...let me think--okay---let's face it, English degree = reading lots of dead authors. But really, let's read everything worth reading. :)
This group is aimed at mid-twenties to mid-thirties (ish) individuals who like to get together over drinks or a meal and have critical discussions about books (mostly classics).
Please read on to find out how we run our book club!
Each Meet Up will run about an hour and a half long, once a month on a Sunday. The first hour will be devoted to discussing the book. The last 15-30 minutes will be set aside to decide the next book to read and who the "Discussion Leader" (see below) will be. At the first few Meet Ups, this last bit of time will also cover things that went well and things that didn't. As this is a new group (started early November of this year), we will be serious about feedback and will be improving according to our needs. After the event is over, people can stay and mingle as they please.
A "Discussion Leader" is a person who has volunteered because they have (most likely) read the book and were there at the meeting to volunteer. This person will pose a question/theme/concept for the group to think about while reading the book and then will lead discussion during the Meet Up. They will also be in charge of bringing others' questions/themes/concepts that have been posted on the event wall throughout the month.
Some Rules : (I know! Rules are sort of lame to put on for a book club, but you'll agree with them, promise. We decided them collectively at the first meeting.) Normal courtesy applies, such as raising your hand if you'd like to speak next, being respectful, being on time, etc. If you haven't quite finished the book and you'd like to come anyway, that's okay--but you will be told the ending. Also, I totally understand last minute emergencies, but please don't RSVP and then not come. If your plans change you should change your status on meetup as soon as you can. This will allow someone on the wait list to be placed on the guest list. Lastly, do not show up if you're not on the guest list. You will be noticed and kindly asked to leave if everyone shows up. I'd hate to do that, but it's already a big group.
Please let me, Jae, know if you have any questions!
