I received this from a colleague this morning and thought you'd all be interested in some of the work IDEO (a really fantastic product design firm, for those who don't know) is supporting through their new initiative, OpenIDEO. I encourage everyone to log in and contribute ideas. Maybe even have some brainstorming sessions on these topics!

Hello LDT network!
Today IDEO launched a new online platform to tackle challenges for social good. It's called OpenIDEO (www.openideo.com)... and it combines the human-centered design process with a community of creative thinkers to incorporate a broader range of inspiration, concepts, and evaluation. We?ve launched with two challenges. The first of these is supported by Jamie Oliver?s Food Revolution (http://www.jamieoliver.com/campaigns/jamies-food-revolution). The challenge poses the question, ?How can we raise kids? awareness of the benefits of fresh food so they can make better choices??
And the second challenge is where you all come in!
It's for Enterprising Schools (http://www.enterprisingschools.com/), an initiative of Gray Matters Capital Foundation. They?re working with affordable private schools around the world, with a special focus on these extremely low cost schools in India. This is an incredibly interesting space to watch in education ? basically, these are schools run by local entrepreneurs serving poor families and charging around US$4-$10 a month for tuition. Right now these schools are lacking in a lot of the basic tools and services to make a school system thrive ? and so the challenge we?re focus on is: ?How might we increase the availability of affordable learning tools & services for students in the developing world??

Right now we?re in ?inspiration? phase of this challenge... Collecting examples of low cost educational tools and services, innovative business models for low cost contexts, and other sources that could inspire new thinking for the overall challenge.
