Emerging Trends in Online Video Learning

Details

Driven by the wave of investment in and by MOOCs and learn to code sites, the education and venture capital communities have recently rediscovered video-based learning. After a decade of focus on less bandwidth and production intensive text based learning (driven by the massive scaling at the University of Phoenix), the explosion of interest in online video-based learning is seen in the fact that over the past few years just ten digital video players Codecademy, Coursera, CreativeLive, Lynda, OpenEnglish, Pluralsight, StormWind, Treehouse, Udacity, Udemy have collectively raised $425 million in venture capital!

Join the leaders of several online video related education technology start-ups for a discussion on emerging trends in online video-based learning. Panelists will also share on their founder's stories.

• Laurie Burruss, director of digital media at Pasadena City College, where she has established many partnerships and collaborations in interactive multimedia, including with companies such as Warner Bros., Disney Imagineering, Industrial Light and Magic, and Apple. Laurie also serves as an education consultant for Lynda.com, one of the leading online education companies in the world, offering thousands of video courses in software, creative and business skills.

• Mike Tringe, co-founder of CreatorUp, an online web series school where creators can learn how to make new video projects. Mike and his co-founders are USC Film School graduates who loved the creative collaboration experience of film school so much that they started CreatorUp to support teachers in the making of their own online projects.

• Justin Wolke, founder of Caseworx, an early-stage startup developing interactive video-based case studies for partners like USC, Pepperdine, Kaplan, UNLV, Qualcomm and many others.

• Our moderator will be Ryan Sweeney, who leads business development with cielo24, a provider of searchable captions for large media platforms in the online education, enterprise, news and entertainment markets. In particular, cielo14 works with nearly every one of the emerging online education providers, including Coursera, Lynda, Stanford, Udacity, etc.

A very special thank you to DLA Piper's Los Angeles offices, whose partners Randy Sokol and Rick Friedman have helped underwrite the event space fees for this and our last event. Say hi to Rick at the Meetup!
