Happy New Year One and All!
We hope that this note finds each of you and yours well, and that your 2013 is off to a terrific start!
As we mark our second New Year together as a community, we can all feel proud that in our short history together we’ve created something special and truly unique. Our recent Holiday Celebration at the Princeton Elks Lodge was a joyous and often rocking family gathering enjoyed by over 150 attendees. This gathering also raised over $1,400 of funds for NJ families affected by Hurricane Sandy, and our new friends at the Elks Lodge are asking when we are want to hold our next joint event at their Lodge. In 2012 we held 4 other “Big Tent” music parties where members signed up and performed with other members songs from themes that ranged from One Hit Wonders to Musicals of Stage and Screen. In between these events we also supported over a dozen community events featuring performances by smaller groups of our members and brought cheer to residents at Merwick Care Center with our now annual Caroling event. As a result of this activity our distinguished membership roster tripled since this time last year. If you haven’t done so lately, try clicking the “MEMBER” link at the top of our Meetup homepage, and you will see a list of profiles of our now 125 members. Next click the “DATE JOINED” switch in the blue “SORT BY:” box, and you will see the profiles of our newest member displayed at the top of the page. I did this earlier today and was delighted to see that an overwhelming majority of our newest members are Singer-Songwriters! So just in time for our February 22nd Music Party – “Singer Songwriters in all Genres,” these newest friends have arrived! PRESTO! That’s the way our community works! Build it and they will come! So reach out and welcome one of our newest members. Perhaps she or he is the collaborator you’ve been searching for.
So let the signups and collaboration for this next evening begin! A signup sheet is now posted at http://www.meetup.com/Einstein-Alley-Musicians-Collaborative/files/ (which can also be accessed via the FILES section (located under the “MORE” tab on the top of our home page). As Rachel previously communicated, the guidelines for the evening are broad. So offer up a song or two by your favorite singer-songwriter, or feel free to share a couple originals of your own. We expect the evening will include offerings from giants such as Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young, but don’t be afraid to stray from the beaten path to share personal favorites from less obvious songwriting greats (Leonard Cohen, Suzanne Vega, John Hiatt, Lowell George to name just a few).
If you would like to sign up for a 10 minute timeslot (including setup time), please text or phone me [masked]), or email me ([address removed]) indicating which song(s) you are planning to perform whether you plan to include any other musicians and whether it is a performance (closed) or jam (open) group. Please indicate your preferred time slot, and subject to availability I will do my best to satisfy your request. Once again the first half of the evening will be protected for acoustic/acapella or softer wooden music, and the rock and rollers amongst us will have ample opportunity to crank it up after 8:20. Right now there are only a handful of timeslots claimed, so please claim a slot. I will manually update the list and post updates every few days.
On a closing note, we are excited about this year and where our wonderful group can go. We have some ideas about this, but we need to hear your thoughts and can’t do it without more help. If you are interested in getting more involved, please reach out to Rachel or me. In the near future we will be convening a non-musical gathering in a roundtable format to help us map out our group’s future. Stay tuned for more.
That’s it for now. We’ll see you next month and wish you and yours a happy, healthy and absolutely musical 2013!
Steven and Rachel
