Our definition of Emergent Christianity:
Emergent Christianity is the evolution of Christianity that transcends tradition, hierarchy, patriarchy, denominations, and dogma. We learn from the scriptures, historic and contemporary Christian teachers, wisdom from other Faiths as well as secular teaching.  We utilize dialogue and conversation in a participatory and non-hierarchical structure.

Our Vision:
In Christian community we strive to be fully authentic, to accept and love each other, and to each grow into our unique personal expression of Christ. This is fundamental for our ‘global village’ of planet Earth to survive and thrive. Our form of service is to model this vision of community locally, while pioneering new methods of joyous coexistence.

We co-create this vision through:

  • Participatory Fellowship: We create a truly interactive gathering time that is not focused on a single leader or leaders, preferring dialogue over monologue.
  • Community: Our dream is that this community will become a ‘container’ capable of holding diverse people and ideas together in a dynamic, productive tension. We welcome challenging interactions, believing that a diversity of viewpoints offers wisdom that can enrich each person’s understanding. We recognize that human beings are all interconnected and that creating authentic communities willing to learn how to create unity-in-diversity are essential for the global future. As our reflection of Jesus’ openness to every person, we welcome members of all races, cultures, classes, genders and sexual orientations. We feel that participating in such a community, that stretches our boundaries at each meeting, is a form of service to global wellbeing, an integral part of who we are as Christians. We trust that ways of life that have true eternal value will rise to the top over time, and that our mistakes will be forgiven. And we believe that if we can be open to who we each really are, we can grow to become our authentic selves.

The Terms of Engagement for our community

  • We value, listen and learn from each other’s unique theology, ideas and opinions.
  • We do not seek to change each other’s mind or come to a common ‘theology’ in the group.
  • We ask questions about others’ thinking and seek to understand.
  • We strive to believe the best of each person, giving compassion, forgiveness, and grace.
  • We practice personal responsibility and hold ourselves and others accountable for these group norms.
  • We strive to be vulnerable and authentic in our dealings with each other and practice committed communication.
  • When emotions rise we give space for them. We take breaks for silence or prayer.
  • We avoid personal attacks, put-downs or judgment.
  • We are unafraid of people from other faiths, and are open to learning from them.
  • We don’t require a professional teaching staff; we learn from the Bible, books, the Spirit, podcasts and other media, and most of all from each other.
  • We are inspired by the idea of exploring ways to create community among people of diverse backgrounds and beliefs, in order to model a Christian response to the emerging globalism of spirituality.
  • Non-hierarchical, we rotate leadership.
  • Non-liturgical, we will choose what traditions we wish to participate in, or create our own, and will encourage innovation.
  • Whatever role finances play in our group will evolve over time, but with no paid staff, we don’t intend to ask for money or tithes for that purpose.
  • We will take advantage of technology and social media, not to replace in-person gatherings, but to supplement them.
