Do you have an old PC lying around and would like to revive it with a lighting fast operating system and cool graphics? Well now you can at the Ubuntu InstallFest 2011 were Ubuntu professionals and enthusiasts will be holding the UAE's first Ubuntu InstallFest on Wednesday 2nd of March 2011.

Overview
An Installfest (a portmanteau of installation and festival) is an event, generally sponsored by a local Linux User Group, university or LAN party, at which people get together to do mass installations of computer operating systems or software, most often Linux and other open source software.

Roles

People involved in an installfest will assume one or more of the following roles

Coordinator

Host
IEEE Student Branch American University of Sharjah;

Gives students the opportunity to become part of the global IEEE organization and the IEEE Computer Society, the IEEE SB also offers many different activities, both fun and educational for the students, allowing them to expand their knowledge.

Hasnaa Rabbat (Chair), Tarek Al Abbas (Executive Assistant)

User

AUS community of around 5000 (student, faculty or staff) needs assistance installing a Ubuntu distribution or solving a specific problem.

Receptionist
Greets people as they come in, gives them a name tag and has them sign a waiver , can direct people to the restrooms, the nearest computer store
Yasser Al-Jundi (Emirates Loco)

Tier 1 support
people who are knowledgeable about Linux and are willing to share their knowledge and provide hands-on assistance to users
Roy Verrips (Emirates Loco) Toki Tahmid (Emirates Loco)

Tier 2 support
sets up and maintains network hardware and services (DNS, DHCP), mirrors of Linux distributions
Jospeph John (Emirates Loco) Dan Romaniuk (Emirates Loco)

KPIs & Indicators

In order to ensure the success of the InstallFest the following KPIs will be measured;

  1. Number of Email Shots sent

  2. Number of Backups made of users data

  3. Number of Overall Ubuntu Installation

  4. Number of Dual Boot Installations

  5. Number of Pure Ubuntu intallations

  6. Number of Successful Installation

  7. Number of Installations with issues
