Supermoon Photowalk

Do you want to capture a picture like this?

Supermoon is scheduled to rise in Dubai at 7 pm...

Golden hour starts at 6 30 pm on 23rd June and in the direction of the moon rise expect hues of red and yellow...

The expected image will be beautiful...

Do not miss the moon rise, because the moon is always the biggest just after it rises...

From the photowalk location, you will have the sea in front of you, burj al arab in the distance and the moon in the background...

And this opportunity is available to you only once a year...
Now you know what you must not miss :)

If you need to reach me (Jason), feel free to call me on[masked] or 050 3175571...

Little Heart broken that I could not make good pictures. (I should have RSVPed Yes for Supermoon 2014 and spent 1 year learning), But I would have definitely regretted if I didn't go there. Thank you Jason for organizing this. The moon must be feeling like a Hollywood superstar with close to 150 photographers waiting to click and I am glad i was part of this event. Thank you guys for the lift also could not have made it to the event otherwise.

Hi Priya, it was nice meeting you at the event... :)

  • JZ A.

There's not doubt that we didn't get what we expected due to haze, because the moon was bigger indeed while it was rising, But I still enjoyed the time when we were waiting for the moon to rise, the gathering of all the like minded people and exchanging ideas was well worth it. I was introduced to different brands of Tripods and lenses which you can only find in an events like this, I Wanted to get the moon setting shots as well but by the time I reached home, I was half dead :/ Thanks to Jason for the great event.

Excellent ! But the Moon seemed like a MoAn. It was supposed to be MORE attractive than the Telescope. But frankly, it wasn't !

  • Nilu

Super moon or not we all took photos & already started to post our pics. I did as well but I spent way too much time on LR, trying to remember and apply Ashraf's lectures.
I found out that what i really learned, the more I practice, the more i'm better, I feel confident!
:( but the facts I have question marks are still causing me problems, no matter how much I practice :( Very funny maybe but I really can't use this 'gradient' tool :D and I have messed up the filing, cataloguing, collections, re-sizing for the web, or print..etc.
I do the changes in LR and when it comes to export, then ppppff:((

Anyways I will try to catch you guys who knows these (Ashraaaffff heellppp :)) and try to learn :)

Maybe it wasn't ''super'' super moon but we were ''super'' there I think :) Everybody was very friendly, sharing their knowledge, their thoughts, their snacks, their smiles. I'm very happy to be a part of it.
Jason thank you, and I think you you were up at 4am for part B ? Well if so, congratulations:))

Meetup was excellent. Forgive me if I'm wrong : The venue COULD have been better. That is, it was ok for shooting a sunrise/sunset but absolutely not appropriate for this particular shoot. A forest/ park could have been a better option. But then, this is my opinion and I may be very wrong.

    June 24, 2013

    • Jason

Park I can understand... but forest in dubai? :)...

I enjoyed it. Went with no expectations, was going to enjoy the experience at the very least. Had fun learning and experimenting with the different appropriate settings with assistance of the EPyC team. Just had a looked at my shots now, some turned out pretty good! I wonder if Jason is still mad enough to come back for part B photowalk at 4am... Who agrees that the humidity sucks?

Rajesh you are definitely a challenge :)
If Abbas can do it, and if he doesnot need the basics, i think we can let him do it...
Besides there is a relative of a EPyC member who will be going around shooting using a point and shoot camera... :)

      June 23, 2013

    • Rajesh P.

Hey, I wasn't kidding. By basics, I meant Shooting sequence, like the beginning, middle and end, coz I never did it b4.

      June 24, 2013

  • Kashif

    Good

    June 24, 2013

  • Jason

    Everyone...
If you have one, please bring your tripods... any form of tripod is better than non...
If you do not have a tripod you can use the corniche concrete wall to stabilize your camera.
Also bring your shutter release cable, if not read about shooting in 2 sec timer mode.
Read about mirror lock up mode... it decreases a lot of camera shake and will assist you in getting sharp images... :)

    3 · June 23, 2013

    • Jason

If you feel your tripod is not strong to bear the weight of your gear... do not extend the legs of the tripod and go low... it will ensure that the camera is stable and will also give a different perspective to your image...

Honestly, I was a bit disappointed because I thought it's gonna be really big reddish colour moon like i had seen before when i had no camera on me but perhaps all the dust and sand in the air had a part to play because we didn't even see the moon till about 30 mins after it was supposed to be out. Nevertheless it was great to see you all and I hope you guys had better luck than I did.

      Sumir, this should help,
Close figure to ur manual settings:
      With tripod:
      ISO: 100 - 200
      Aperture: F 11-14
      Shutter: 1/125 - 1/250

    • Jason

I hope you will be shooting the moon from where ever you are...
Look up moon rise and set coordinates and time in your city... it would be interesting to see images from a different city... :)
      There is always a way...

      June 23, 2013

  • Jason

Here is my situation... I am taking a 400 mm lens and 2x converter on rent for 24 hours...

The moon is the biggest on 23rd June in the evening...
The moon looks the largest when it is over the horizon...
Which means it will look biggest even at Moon set, between 4 - 5 am on 24th June.

    We should do the following...
We shoot the rise which starts at 7 pm on 23rd June...
Head back home maybe around 9 pm...
Sleep by 10, and wake up at 3 am (5 1/2 hrs of sleep)...
Meet at the entrance of Umm Suqueim park (the beach adjacent to the Burj Al Arab)

And shoot the moon set at 4 - 5 am...
    What do you think?
I am still contemplating the idea... watch this space for more...

    1 · June 22, 2013

    • Naveed

Jason, what is your recommendation on Lens?

      June 23, 2013

    • Jason

@naveed, ideally if you want to fill up the frame with the image of the moon, you would need Effective Focal Length of 400 mm plus.
On the other hand photography is not always about gear... you would be able to get creative shots with you 5d M3 + 70 - 200 mm f2.8 lens
