What Your Mother Never Told You About Erlang
Garrett Smith
Between Erlang's semantics and unique programming idioms, its learning curve can feel steep! In this talk Garrett will reveal Erlang's hidden pitfalls that aren't covered in books. If you're coming from Java, Ruby, Python - or any language that supports OO + imperative patterns - you'll get a heads up on the topics that cause the most trouble when learning Erlang. Includes coverage of state management, iteration, pattern matching, and OTP.
Embedded Erlang
Brian Chamberlain
Embedded Linux systems are gaining in popularity in the maker/hacker communities. Platforms such as the BeagleBone and RaspberryPi have created new interest in systems which can interact with the physical world. However, interacting with the physical world can be a challenge. Luckily, we have Erlang to help us out! This talk will cover new hardware platforms, embedded Linux systems, why Erlang is a good fit, and how you can get started hardware hacking the world with Erlang.
Lightning Talks
You!
We will have some time toward the end of the meeting for impromptu lightning talks. These should be limited to 5 - 10 minutes and on can be anything you think is interesting! So far we have Evan Miller, who will present a "Report from the Vatican (his experiences at the User Conference in Stockholm) and Jesse Gumm, who will present on his excellent date/time library qdate.
Meet Up With Scala User Group (afterward, optional)
The Scala group is meeting just down the road from us, so we've arranged an informal meeting afterward at New Line Tavern. Please note that this may evolve into a full on street brawl, depending on how people feel.
