Chicago Erlang Users - June 2012

Learn Erlang in Three Hours

If want to learn Erlang, and you have three hours on a Wednesday night, this is the premier Chicagoland event for you!

It's true -- in just three hours you'll learn everything you'll need to know about Erlang! *

This will obviously be a whirl wind class, so we'll have beer on hand for those who get thirsty.

We'll also try to have something there to eat, but try to grab some food beforehand if possible.

* May take more than three hours to learn everything you need to know about Erlang

Quite a bit of fun. We didn't quite get through as much as I'd hoped, but it's a complicated subject, so I can let that one slide.

This was a very effective presentation which I felt gave good immediate insight into the process of writing in Erlang. Some of the covered topics were: what the tools look like, how a programmer approaches errors, the basic theoretical apparatus (syntax, types, the runtime environment). All were presented in the context of writing a functioning, non-trivial application.

First off, this was one of the better meetup groups I've attended. The speaker was entertaining, which was way better than the other dry presentations I've attended in the past, and seemed knowledgeable. [masked] stars.

He did admit repeatedly that we needed at least another 3 hours. I agree, and would very much like to see that happen before the information becomes stale. Also, I would have liked to see more on higher order functions.

I only knew a tiny about Erlang, from attending a previous meetup last year, and I think these "intro" meetups stir up a lot of positive interest in Erlang!

Oh, and do you think people would want to meetup the night before for an "install fest"?
