Is Alchemy, Magic, Science or Spiritual Path? Alchemy has been with us since the dawn of civilisation - discovering the properties of mineral and plant substances became the technology of prehistoric times. In ancient Egypt it was magical knowledge given by Thoth, later identified with Hermes or Mercury, who was associated with the forces of transmutation and healing.
It was also the revelation of the cosmic intelligences.
In the Middle Ages, alchemists experimented with salt, mercury and sulphur processes. By discovering the secrets of the natural world, together with contemplation and prayer, they hoped to activate and transform inner soul forces, in their striving to reveal the truth of the Hermetic principle "As above, so below." These efforts are today considered the prototypes of science in the fields of chemistry, physics and medicine.
Does the alchemical quest have relevance in our time? Is it a spiritual path that recognises the 'gold' in every human being? Rudolf Steiner tells us - "the secret of spiritual investigation is that human beings transform themselves through transmutation of their consciousness."
