It takes a major effort to learn emacs and that can make it difficult to convince beginning Linux/Unix students of the value of putting in the effort.
Since the 1980s. I have used several different versions of emacs, but now days I just use GNU-Emacs. At one time I wrote a number of on-adds in elisp, but I don't write much software anymore and haven't written elisp since the 1990s.
