Midsommar at Skansen

  • June 21, 2013 · 11:30 AM

Let's meet up and enjoy Midsommar at Skansen. There are events taking place all day long including the tradition of raising the May Pole (Majstången) at 14:00.

Here is a Video from Skansen at Midsommar

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvtppglzMNk

After consolidating all the advice given and considering the size of the park, a long day of activities, and the potential for crowds on Friday, I suggest the following:

I recommend that you come into the park as early as possible.  Then we meet at 11:30 inside the park at a building called Vakt Stugan/Lodge.  It is labeled with the letter "I" as an information place on your map.  It is a red building, with white and green trim and has a large clock on the east end.  We meet under the clock at 11:30-11:45 then proceed to a place to have a picnic.(we will try stake out and reserve a place ahead of time). UPDATE! We have a WE ARE HERE flag that we will set up in the picnic area so that you can find us there also in case you come later.  Then join in on the festivities when they start at 2pm.  I will mail my cell phone number to  participants so if you come late or get lost you can send an sms.

Google "Skansen Vakt Stugan" and then click "images" for pictures of what the meeting place looks like. It is in a fairly central part of the park not far from the May Pole area.

Follow the map you are given when you enter Skansen. At the bottom is the entrance, in the top centre you will see Vakt Stugan and an i for information

The forecast for tomorrow is still a dry one... Jag håller tummarna! It's Midsommar so I will hold my thumbs in grand Swedish tradition instead of crossing my fingers.

Hi there, I'm in Stockholm for a business trip and I would love to celebrate midsommar at Skansen with you. I need to leave during the late afternoon, as I'm going to fly back to Germany. How will I recognoise you?

    June 20, 2013

    • Kim L

We are meeting at 1130 at the Vakt Stugan. (see instructions above) I will make a sign of some sort and be on the lookout for folks that look lost and or uncertain about something ;) I will also send a mail Friday morning to all participants with my cell number and what I am wearing for the day and with luck that will work.

Is it ok to take food in to the park Kim?

    June 20, 2013

    • Kim L

Yes, on their website they even have a page called "Enjoy a picnic at Skansen" so that is exactly what we are going to do. Bring a lunch and we can picnic together around noon.

A friend sent me this link. She suggested I post it here as a tutorial about Swedish Midsommar. It's hysterical. She is joining us, you can ask her yourself if it's true. Thank you Viveka!

Thanks for organizing that, Kim :-)

I just have one comment: I was there 2 years ago, I arrived at 13.00 and it was OK to see the pole but it was much too packed to see what they were doing at the bottom of the pole, but this should be the interesting part :-(
So I think it's a great idea to go but plan to be there very early as it will be full of tourists who come to Sweden only for Midsommar, and full of Swedish families who want to make their children dance at the pole.

My recommendation: Get into the park as early as possible (for example at its opening at 10.00), take things to eat, picnic and wait as close as possible to the pole.
Once you are there and in the crowd, it will be difficult to find each other as phones may not work because of the crowd. It's like when you are at a huge concert :-)

But if you manage to see something, it's one of the most important moments in the Swedish culture so it has to be seen!

I won't be able to come but good luck and have fun!
