What is Existentialism?

  • Jul 3, 2014 · 7:00 PM

We will begin with a general discussion over Existentialism: What is it? Which philosophers were actually Existentialist? Is Existentialism still relevant today? Does "existence precede essence"? And what does that even mean?

For those who would like to read up on the subject beforehand, here is a link to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy's entry for Existentialism:  http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/existentialism/

At the end we will decide which text is going to be discussed at our next meetup. Currently, the organizer is leaning towards Kierkegaard's _Fear and Trembling_ or _The Present Age_ but will offer other suggestions (and he's always open to your's).

Fun first meeting. Looks like we've got a very well-rounded group of people with lots of interesting things to add to the discussion. Can't wait 'til the next get together!

Sorry for the late scratch, but I'll be working late tonight... I was really looking forward to it, so hopefully there will be another meetup soon.

I too am looking forward to meet everyone. At this point , I will appreciate any suggestion/advise for parking !!

Hi K! I must admit that parking can be tricky in the Montrose area. I would try to get there a bit early, and if you don't mind walking a block or two try parking in the neighborhood behind the venue (or on the other side of Westheimer behind Cafe Brasil).

Alright! I'm excited to meet everyone tomorrow. Looks like we're going to have a pretty good turn-out. I'll be getting to the venue about an hour early. If anyone else can show up a bit early to help me claim a good spot/area for the group, then that would be totally awesome. If the weather is nice enough, I'd like to have the meeting outside on their patio. Otherwise, there is an area upstairs that will probably work just fine. Lemme know if you have any questions.

Another YouTube playlist of interest. William Barrett discusses Existentialism with Bryan Magee: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvfgAvtNulw&list=PLSpPI0lyEIr2y4LD1czcrqjxzgIb3R5LN

So I've created a corresponding group page on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/325396690943022/
Feel free to join the group there (and "add me" as a friend if you like).

Here is a link to some BBC documentaries of interest. This is a three part series produced in 1999 entitled "Human, All Too Human". The playlist includes all three episodes (one on Nietzsche, one on Heidegger, and one on Sartre). Enjoy!
