Git (version control) and ExpressionEngine

Hi Everyone! It's time for another meetup, and this one covers version control, mostly Git. This is less of a speaker-driven event and more of a roundtable discussion.

If you are totally new to Git or version control, this will be a great place to be. And if you're a seasoned Git user, this will be a great place to learn a few new tricks and to share your knowledge with the group. I've been diving into Git myself the past few weeks and I'm excited to learn more.

We'll be meeting at the wonderful Kleverdog Cowork again, except in their new Acadamie studio. Kleverdog is doing some wonderful things in the new space:
"Kleverdog Academie offers excellent continuing education through its Independent Study Course series. We provide graphic designers, artists, web designers, illustrators, photographers, animators, educators, and students with a stimulating choice of contemporary professional topics taught by seasoned industry professionals. We're offering our courses in 4 different formats to meet your personal learning style."

Check them out here:

I hope to see you all there!

I'm currently using Git with my system folder in the default location. If I move the system above web root, what is the best way to configure Git so it works correctly with the other files in my server (local and production)?

Thanks to Ben for stepping up and giving a presentation that was pitched precisely at the level I needed.

great meetup, I had finally gotten my Git workflow down so much was review. However, there were some bits that were new to me and made it worthwhile.

I appreciate the effort the organizers put into the meeting, but I would leave stuff not directly related to EE to more general development groups. (I knew the subject going in, and went mainly to meet some EE people, so it's not that I feel misled.) For instance, we spent a short time talking about Git and the EE system and add-ons; I would love to have a whole meeting about how people manage updating both. I only have two EE clients, but still find updates ridiculously awkward. If I had a bunch, it would be a major concern.

I came up early to avoid traffic. The Kleverdog space is great! If anyone is around and wants to grab dinner beforehand, let me know.

I've been thrashing around in Git-land with Beginner's mind (Hooray for N00bs!)

Discoveries, so far: Git is not the same thing as So don't go to to learn about Git.

Where to go to learn? GIT home page and Doc page: 4 Videos linked to at the bottom of the doc page are Incredibly Helpful. As is this reference link, Git for designers.
