July 11, 2014 FMDiSC Meeting
Come one, come all FMDiSC members and FileMaker enthusiasts!
Our next meeting is Friday, July 11, from 9:30am to 1:00pm. If you've never been to one of our meetings before, just feel free to show up - no need to RSVP. We'd love to see you at the meeting and new members are always welcome!
A Little Web-Direct Direction...
When you consider FileMaker 13's exciting new WebDirect feature, do you sometimes feel like a child, lost in the woods and running out of breadcrumbs? Well, wake up, you're in LA, it's 2014 and you don't live in a German folktale! (Unless you've scored a guest-star role on Grimm.) Besides, Expert Developer Brent Hedden is here to lead you out of the forest and into the light! Brent is The Rockin' FileMaker Dude at Nth Generation Computing, and he will be presenting a case study on how to rock out with crazy-rockin' WebDirect. Brent's company has been using a time entry system for years, and Brent is the man who recently pumped it up with new WebDirect superpowers. He'll share with you what he learned along the way – what to do, what not to do, and important technical setup and business considerations to take into account. He'll even show you a nifty demo for installing a public certificate for SSL use! So eat the rest of that baguette and rock on.
Portal-Poppin' And The 13th Dimension
Is there no end to the cool stuff you can do with FileMaker 13's new layout capabilities?? Take, for example, the lowly and troublesome portal. We all need a portal of some kind. And in our darker moments, we quietly struggle with what we can fit on it, where to put it, and how best to let the user interact with the data it represents. And what of the layout itself? Haven't we all felt penned in by the simple limitations of real estate and context on any given screen? Well, FM 13 has opened the door to new dimensions of space within space (within space within space within spaaaaace) and who better to take you through that multidimensional universe but FileMaker Whiz and Renaissance Man, Steve Sauber! Steve, former man-who-did-everything at Emoto Music, will be taking you on a tour of two of Ray Cologon's far out FM 13 demo files: Namely, the Portal Control System and theScreen Popover Jimi Hendrix-like experience. Keep your safety goggles on (to prevent your eyes from popping completely out of your head) 'cuz you're gonna learn how to set up some double-clickin', drag-n-droppin', tricked-out portal rows AND travel from dimension to dimension to dimension to dim-e-e-e-e-e-e-nsion... (and back!)
Go Totally Corporate Without Going Totally Corporate!
Bob Gossom of Absolute Advantage is back! And he's going to save you thousands of dollars every year – in taxes! Your company may be set up as a sole proprietorship right now, but you may be surprised to learn how much money you could save by setting yourself up as a corporation instead. Bob has an MBA from Pepperdine University and has helped establish the legal position of over 10 companies. Bob's presentation will be a comprehensive discussion of the legal structure of your business. Bob will discuss the differences between S Corporations, C Corporations, and LLCs; he will discuss the pros and cons of Workers Compensation and Liability Insurance; and he will explain what it means to Pierce the Corporate Veil (in a non-Van Nuys kind of way). Best of all, Bob will demonstrate how all of this affects your tax bill, how your business structure can protect your assets, and how your legal position can help your business grow. Bottom line is, if you're interested in maximizing your assets and protecting yourself against risk (in a non-Van Nuys kind of way) this is a presentation you must not miss!
Let Me Tell You How It Will Be, It's One For You Nineteen For Me...
We will then open things up to a roundtable discussion on taxes – city, state, federal, the whole kit-n-kaboodle. So please bring your questions and experiences to share, for we all benefit from the great communal, accumulated knowledge of FMDiSC!

Bresee Youth Foundation
184 S. Bimini Place
Los Angeles, CA 90004
We meet in the computer lab.
Bresee is near the corner of 3rd Street & Vermont, in Koreatown/Central Los Angeles. If you're at the corner of 3rd Street & Vermont, just go North on Vermont, then take a right on 2nd Street. The first street you come to is Bimini Place. It's on the corner of 2nd & Bimini Place.
The FMDiSC board is very proud of our group! Our new donation policy has proven quite successful. We're getting record donations made to Bresee at a time when they are most needed. Again, we ask a minimum donation to Bresee of $10 per meeting for each attendee. New members are exempt at their first meeting (we call this a free demo in the software world).
We will continue to operate under the honor system, so please keep track if you pay in advance. In addition to cash, Bresee can accept checks made payable to the Bresee Youth Foundation, and can process credit card charges. They will happily provide tax receipts for your deductible donation. Bresee has been gracious enough to allow us to meet at their facility for FREE since December 2002. They provide invaluable social services to the community, and we encourage everyone to give generously for their mission and for their generosity toward FMDiSC. With the increased revenue from this recommended donation, we will be funding breakfast from the donations each month, and passing the rest along to Bresee. We will continue to ask for volunteers to pick up the food & drink. If willing volunteers for food pickup are not forthcoming, breakfast will be cancelled and Bresee will get more money!
Jonathan Reff is the board member shepherding this meeting.
