New Meeting: George Washington National Forest - Big Schloss

From: Adrienne
Sent on: Monday, April 14, 2008 11:53 AM
Announcing a new meeting for The Fairlington Social Club!

What: George Washington National Forest - Big Schloss

When: Saturday, May 3, 8:15 AM

Where: George Washington National Forest - Big Schloss

Who should come: Anyone in reasonably good shape who enjoys a good Saturday hike.

Why: Join us because we rock!

Meeting Description: The last hike we did was awesome - strenuous and a real adventure, but we survived and even had a great time! This time around we will go a little easier on you. We will head to the George Washington National Forest to hike Big Schloss. This hike affords some spectacular views with moderate effort.

We will start early to avoid crowds and take advantage of nice weather For those carpooling, plan to meet at 8:15AM in front of the North Fairlington Community center. We will aim to arrive at the hike by 10AM, leaving enough time for a bathroom stop along the way. If you're driving on your own plan to meet Wolf Gap Campground parking at 10AM. There are two trails that lead out of the parking lot, Big Schloss and Tibbet Knob. We'll start with Big Schloss and afterwards, for those who wish to continue hiking may take on Tibbet Knob. After the hike, we can try to find a good place to stop for a bite to eat and drinks.

Be sure to dress appropriately, bring water and pack a lunch/snacks.

Depending on your pace, Big Schloss will take about 3 hours. It's a 4.4-mile hike and you end up doing about 1,000 ft upward. Descriptions for both trails are below:

Big Schloss: http://www.hikingupwa...
Tibbet Knob: http://www.hikingupwa...

I'll post directions to the park closer to the date.
