Back To Work - Our 9th 'Find A Tech Job In London' FREE Beer and Pizza meetup

  • September 11, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

WED 4/9/13 NOTE: FROM TODAY PLEASE ONLY RSVP IF YOU ARE A DIRECT EMPLOYER OR A CANDIDATE.

Hi Everyone,

This month we've got plenty of good news. We've had some fantastic and well established companies join the group, we're excited to announce a great venue for our next meetup, and, best of all to attract top hiring companies, we've grown to almost 1100 members! As of 5th September, we've quite a lot of early stage startups looking for staff, and more established players like KPMG, Which? Magazine, Penguin Books, Gamesys, and of course, Ticketmaster themselves.

On September 11th we're hosting our next meetup at Ticketmaster, the number one web destination for live event tickets in the UK, attracting over 6.2 million unique visits per month. To see Ticketmaster's vacancies visit http://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/careers

Why should YOU attend?

• Candidates find work at our events, our track record is very good.

• Our meetup attracts excellent London based tech talent and a mix of exciting, well established companies looking to hire, as well as some startups.

• Great centrally located venue a stones throw from Angel Tube Station at Ticketmaster. Their offices have a pretty amazing bar with a slide and a juke box, see the picture below, you'll have fun whilst networking!

• Plenty of time for networking - networks are how you get hired, and you meet interesting people, the movers and shakers in London's tech scene!

• We'll have our unique, new and improved skills and role badges helping match candidate and hirer tech skills or skills requirements, quickly and efficiently. And you'll still have more fun with stickers than you've had since you were 5.

• Short presentations by employers and (optionally) candidates looking to hire/find work.

• You'll meet employers and recruiting agents face to face - who wants to spend 20-30 minutes on the phone when you can chat in person?

• It's efficient - you can talk to around a dozen people interested in what you do at the one event, over a few hours, after work.

• EVEN MORE BEER AND PIZZA courtesy of our sponsors Ticketmaster in a relaxed, fun and friendly environment.

• Always FREE FOR CANDIDATES - if you're looking for a job, we don't ask for money. Companies can help by sponsoring the event... and save by meeting dozens of candidates, for free or low cost.

Remember to bring a few CVs and business cards, but be prepared to exchange emails and text messages with interested and interesting people, too!

Sponsors

Please get in touch if you'd like to sponsor future events. We're looking particularly for companies interested in an event in the last two weeks of November, and for another event early in the New Year.

Who should attend?

Developers (all programming languages), technologists, people involved in the tech scene - web devs, UXDs, data analysts, etc, employers, recruiters, anyone looking for a permanent or contract tech job now or in the short term future or to hire developers \ technologists. Our aim is to make finding a tech job as easy, pleasant and as efficient as possible.

Who should not attend?

If the paragraph above does not relate to you then please check before RSVPing. This event is for tech job seekers and those offering tech jobs, only.

To be perfectly clear, if you are a techie looking for a job, or if you're an employer, or a recruiting agent for employers of full time or contract technical staff - we're here for you. If you're selling to companies, or candidates - we're not.

Format

6:30pm:  Arrive, sign in & badge up, meet and greet
7:00pm:  Presentation by our sponsors, employers and those candidates who wish to speak.
7:30pm:  One to one networking

We're looking forward to seeing you!

Great mix of direct recruiters, agents and candidates. It was a real struggle to hear the speakers.

    1 · September 14, 2013

    • Jeremy C.

Sooo..... what was the problem with hearing the speakers? Room acoustics, mumbling presenters, noisy crowd, ????

      September 14, 2013

    • A former member
      A former member

A couple of the speakers didn't speak very loud and I wondered if those at the back could hear. Having the speaker at one end of a long-narrow room probably didn't help, rather than having them halfway down.

It was really good. I presented my business for the first time ever. I hadn't expected to do it and I hadn't planned anything. It was well received and several fascinating and really lovely people came up to talk to me about it because they were interested in it. It was a great feeling. Thank you so much to the organisers and hosts.

Thanks. Have you checked out How Are You? Patient Record Management system developed by Cambridge Healthcare (a business) for the NHS, and open sourced. It's amazingly good, IMO. I did some work with a doctor on setting up a modern practice - How Are You was leagues ahead of the other systems we looked at.

This was a fantastic meet-up and allowed us to meet with a number of superbly suitable candidates. Great atmosphere and some fantastic people. Thanks for organising - we shall definitely be back!

It was my first meetup and I'll be heartily recommending it - thanks for the sweets and pizzas guys. Met some great candidates and it was also awesome to check out what other London startups are up to.

As mentioned in the pitch, we've recently closed a round of funding (check out this TechCityNews article for more info: http://techcitynews.com/2013/08/20/farmdrop-boosted-by-angel-backing-doubles-team/) and are looking to grow our tech bench.

We're looking for a couple of hungry enthusiastic developers who are not just looking for a job, but are genuinely excited by the prospect of having an integral role in an exciting, innovative sharing economy startup. There are two roles and between the two we need the following skills: Front-End skills: Javascript, AngularJS, Grunt, Yeoman, Bootstrap, jQuery Back-End skills: Ruby, Rails, SpreeCommerce, Postgres, Heroku, Node. If you want to chat further please drop me a line at [masked]. Thanks!

It was my first time at a 'Find A Tech Job' and as someone looking for what's out there in terms of companies and their requirements from developers, I found it very interesting and useful.

    1 · September 12, 2013

  • Robert F.

Good meetup, well organised and well marketed giving rise to a really good turnout and more importantly excellent mix of companies and candidates. So often these types of events are one-sided with developers far out-numbering candidates or vice-versa. Look forward to the next one at which I will definitely pitch my business(es) and positions on offer. I will follow up with those that I met shortly and those that I didn't manage to speak with and that are still looking for cool job opportunities (see previous comment below for some details), please get in touch.

Congrats again to David and Jeremy and speak to you all very soon.

    All the best,

What is the scope of joining an entry level role as Front End Developer or Test Analyst with zero experience under your belt? I have the knowledge without experience? Any suggestions...??

    September 11, 2013

    • Jeremy C.

Very early stage, zero budget startups are often happy to get any help - depending on your personality that might work. If you have aptitude, then some employers recruit recent inexperienced graduates. Ravn Systems likes fresh grads with heavy machine learning and big data courses, for example. So... There's no single, simple answer. Like a lot of IT. You solve the problem you have with the restrictions you have. Or reformulate the problem.

      1 · September 11, 2013

  • Jeremy C.

How to get there... Exit Angel tube, turn left towards the major crossroad. At the crossroad, turn right onto Pentonville Road. Entrance is on the right, number 4. Entrance is huge sliding glass door. We're on the right, inside and downstairs - but there'll be people to help you.

    2 · September 6, 2013

    • Jeremy C.

Hi Ryan - not a problem to post job listings, when you will be present to discuss them with candidates. It's actually beneficial - helps the right candidates to decide to come, and helps candidates who are not being sought to decide whether they'll be attending primarily for the networking rather than a specific role. So, definitely post *SHORT* client mission, and the skill sets and experience sought!

      September 8, 2013

    • Neil M.

The group is intended for people who work in agencies too, it was the nature of the other post that looked like it was no more than a copy-pasted job spec with loads of buzzwords that caused my reaction.

There is a Hadoop Users group meetup tomorrow although RSVPs are closed now. You might have better luck there finding the person that matches.
