HWY 331 TRAIL EXPANSION PROJECT

CHOCTAWHATCHEE   F-TROOP

Join Florida Trail Association volunteers developing two new miles of the Florida National Scenic Trail.

Description: The Florida National Scenic Trail, or the Florida Trail for short, runs 1,100 miles from Gulf Islands National Seashore near Pensacola to the Big Cypress National Preserve west of Naples.  This project is in the Florida Panhandle near Destin.  The Florida Trail in Okaloosa and Walton Counties is primarily on the Eglin AFB Reservation or the Nokuse Plantation. This site is on Eglin west of US 331 between DeFuniak Springs and Freeport.

Project – What and Why: Volunteers will help construct a new trail segment.  Work will include clearing the trail corridor, grubbing out small trees and brush, clearing roots and trees, and constructing trail structures. This new trail segment will remove two miles from a road walk along busy U.S. Hwy. 331 making it a safer and more scenic route.

Sponsors: USFS in Florida and the Florida Trail Association

There is NO fee to register for this event but DONATION to support the work are always accepted and appreciated.

I wondered about tools and supplies too. Trail hogs wear hard hats and orange vests. I'm bringing everything I can, whether needed or not.

      January 8, 2014

    • Tom D.

Midge, yes you'll need to provide your own snacks and lunch. No latrines are at the worksites (plan accordingly). We'll supply the tools but bring plenty of water.

Since I am a 'camping princess', I will bring my RV :). There is room for one tent on the site if anyone is interested (I believe you cannot have more than 2 camps per site)

Caroling, we are cancelling this trip due to business opportunities. Will you have a camp site or should I come down and sign in for you?

      January 8, 2014

    • Caroling

Nadine, Sorry you won't be there. You can cancel the reservation, right? No need to come down but thanks so much for the offer. I can share or get a site for myself. Also, I won't really know until Sat. night if weather permits me to camp. I have to charge all my electronics and they can't get wet. Happy business pops!!

CHANGE NOTICES: If it becomes necessary to make workday changes or adjustments they'll be announced at the Park campground pavilion and posted as a comment for this Meetup. No announcement or notice means 'no change' and everything will proceed as planned.

I won't be making it back to Florida for another 2.5-3 more weeks due to the extensive damage to my car and waiting for all of the parts so if there is anybody on ten waiting list they can take my place.

    January 3, 2014

  • Tim C.

All. We have attached 3 links (above) for the Job Hazard Analysis’s (JHA) covering the work and tools that we may be using during this event. Please take the time to read each one as we will be signing them before we start work on the new trail. If you have any question please give me a call[masked]

This may be late in the game to ask, but do we need a permit or pass? And if so how do I get one?

    January 2, 2014

    • Tom D.

Eric, You do not need an Eglin Recreation Permit we'll obtain permit to cover everyone.
