Enter the greens...

As per my proposal of introducing the group to different political groups and parties, I've invited the Green party representative for Abbotsford/Mission to meet us this Sunday, 12:00 @ the legal grounds coffee house. Aird Flavelle and Stephen O'shea will join us to explain their positions but more importantly, listen to us. This is an easy first try at us making an impression before tackling bigger fish

Here are two good definitions.THe first by the International Humanist and Ethical Union and the second by the BC Humanists.

Humanism is a democratic and ethical life stance, which affirms that human beings have the right and responsibility to give meaning and shape to their own lives. It stands for the building of a more humane society through an ethic based on human and other natural values in the spirit of reason and free inquiry through human capabilities. It is not theistic and it does not accept supernatural views of reality.

Humanism rejects the concept of the supernatural and considers that human problems have to be solved by human means

It's ironic that while we were debating the issue of having "Atheist" in the name of the group and our first new comer outsider is confused by the word humanist

The meeting with Aird Flavelle went very well--a good warm up to meeting others. If I had heard him ask the question "What is a Humanitarian?" I would have been glad to enlighten him about its many positives. Apparently there was a long silence.

Hi Ivor!Actually he said "what is a humanist?" We are not used to having to define it to people, hence the moment of silence. :0)

The candidates, Stephen O'shea and Aird Flavelle were informative about their political positions and were pleasantly engaged with us. Thanks to Kevin for getting them to come!
