At our last meeting I introduced a list of actions we, as a group, will need to attend to in the near future. I promised to send the information to everyone and so here it is:
1. Business cards: Genaric cards with contact information for FANM. These are intended to be available to all members to pass out to interested persons. One thing that would be nice to have on the cads is a FANM logo. At this point we don't have money to spend on development of a logo but if anyone in the group has that talent or knows of someone who might be interested in helping please let us know. It would be nice to has multiple ideas for the membership to choose from.
2. Formal membership: It's time that we had a serious discussion of membership with an application and perhaps a modest dues structure. Obviously this is something we need to discuss in an open meeting but in the meanwhile I'd be very interested in sampling everyone's opinion on the subject.
3. Treasurer:At our October we received our first ever donations to FANM by placing a basket on the table for those who wanted to make a freewill offering. Surprisingly we received a generous total of $49.00! Having reported that, we now need to think about two things. First, now that we have money we need a treasurer who has the time and talent to manage the FANM funds and report periodically to the group. Second, we will need to open a checking account and that's going to require jumping through some hoops for the bank/credit union. One of our members who is knowledgeable in that area has volunteered to advise the treasurer on how to proceed but we will need a person to fill the role of treasurer.
4. Planning Committee:In order to leave the bulk of our Second Sunday monthly meetings for programs and discussion, we need a five member Planning Committee. This committee would, in some ways, act like a board of directors by discussing the future of the group, narrowing down ideas, and bringing ideas to the general membership for a decision. I have already volunteered to serve on the Planning Committee, at least in the beginning, but we need four more members to make the committee viable. I hope that at our next meeting we can decide who will serve on this committee and get things rolling.
One last thing:Last night (Monday 10/10) Christine and I visited the monthly meeting of the Grand Traverse Humanists (GTH) in Traverse City. Five members of GTH were kind enough to come to our October meeting and present a program about the history of the group and to explain the social and service projects they are currently involved in. Christine and I returned the favor. We were given the opportunity to address the group and talk about how FANM got started, some of our current projects and concerns, and to dream out loud about what the future might hold. It was a wonderful meeting with this highly evolved organization and we are already discussing the possibility of future combined social and action projects. As soon as their new website is online I will send FANM members a link. They are planning to include a link to our Meetup.Com site.
