Re: [Freethought-Association-of-Northern-Michigan] Pellston Board of Education prayer issue

Nancy makes a good point I had not sufficiently taken into consideration.  It would be better if we could find Pellston residents who would like to work on this issue, and we could support them.  We are only semi-outsiders because our group includes Pellston geographically.  Maybe we need to make a point of targeting Pellston for outreach, so any interested residents of our persuasion could find us.  Do they have a newspaper? We could put a notice on a grocery store bulletin board (we would have to make a point of replacing it after people tear it down).  How else could we advertise our existence to them?  Perhaps advertise and hold one of our meetings in Pellston rather than Petoskey, so interested residents would be more likely to come.  In other words, not focus so much on the Nov 14 school board meeting as in building support for separation of church and state in Pellston, with the ultimate goal of ending their prayer practice.  If anyone asked why we selected Pellston to target, we could say it was because of this school board issue.

Nancy here - I am NOT comfortable with any 'attack' or plan with outsiders telling locals what to do - this is very much like a rural people being told what is best for them by outsiders - I live in a rural area and think I know the mentality - only people in the Pellston school area would be involved - puts FF in a very negative situtation - be nice if all people were open about separation of church and state but this is going to be tough  - sorry but I am not comfortable with being a part of a 'united front' -

I was at the RSVP luncheon last Tuesday - about 150 - after Pledge they began the Lord's Prayer - surprised me - I chose to not participate but very much appreciated by the group - interesting -  again - this is an issue that will not be helped with my speaking out - I said something to one person at our table and a 'friend' changed in an instant - at least I know what to expect if I chose to attend another luncheon

I'll let Glenn know of your message - he will decide for himself  - nancy

Below is part of an email I received last evening from Annie Laurie Gaylor, Co-President of the Freedom from Religion Foundation. She is responding to my inquiry regarding what's next in the Pellston prayer issue. After you read the email I'd ask that you consider if a unified visit to the next Pellston School Board meeting, Monday November 14th, is something that you would feel comfortable taking part in. If we as a group agree to do this and present a united front I will volunteer to be the one who actually speaks to the board and asks them to stop the practice.

I am very anxious to hear from each of you.

Kristen is only in barely 8 hours a week if that - she's a fall intern with limited hours. I've asked her to talk to me about this. We are atheists around here & we don't believe in miracles :) It's great to have a complainant who can monitor these violations. i have suggested a follow-up phone call, a news release & an action alert. We just got back from our national convention (you're chapter is in, by the way & everyone was very pleased) and can try to do some catch-up.  The 6th circuit is on our side & we will get them to stop, eventually. You should fill me in (since I'm after hours & kristen's here so briefly every week) about whether you and the chapter have taken any action. If not, that would really help. Go and speak at the school board meeting against it, etc. maybe you've done this - but if not, it would be helpful. We could let area members know if there was to be a contingent of you - i would suggest phoning me well in advance of a planned 'attack' like this so we have time to get the word out. Thanks and i know Kristen will be in touch. Our senior staff attorney who is due to give birth monday phoned after her doc's appt this aft.  to say they're inducing her tomorrow for health reasons. She'll be gone 2 months and was out a lot previously on bedrest. We think we're trundling along pretty well but it's been a difficult year! Annie Laurie
