Update, I talked with Rachael Brougham from the news paper and
gathered some information from her about the situation. She
indicated that some of the parents at the board meeting had done
some research and were somewhat informed about Young Life.
I talked to a member of the legal team at FFRF and he was
very helpful. He has had previous experience with Young Life and
similar groups that use the public schools as recruitment centers.
They send in young "hip" individuals to build relationships and then
encourage them to join their after school group. He is sending the
Petoskey board office an informational letter that will educate them
on Young Life, their mission and methods. Better to prevent further
contact before they get entrenched.
There is also a Methodist group that works with kids at
Ottawa Elementary School in Petoskey. From what I can gather, this
is a group of adults from the church that go in and help with
tutoring and I have no problem with that at all. As a retired
teacher, I know how important on on one tutoring can be for
Rachael mentioned that she plans to keep an eye on this
situation with the board and will report on anything new. So, for
those of you that get the News Review, keep an eye out for updates
from the school board.
