Disclosure: The photo above is not how the Banning State Park will actually look this weekend.
Join us on sub-Arctic canoeing and preparation for winter snowcamping trip adventure. We will carpool (when possible) to Banning State Park( leave northern burbs at 3 PM on Friday) , carry our canoe(s) to landing and then paddle upstream to remote BWCA like campsite on the east shore of Kettle River. About the campsite: It is magic place nested in midst of white pines, with pine needles lining the forest floor. A fire ring and picnic table makes it more hospitable. Outdoor biffy nearby. We will explore the trail running by and along the Kettle River. Discover the Dragon's tooth, Hell's Gate rapids, taste wintergreen and spy the nearby wetland. Who knows, maybe we will even shoot the Blueberrry Slide rapids (not!). Weather will be balmy (not snowcamping like), overight at 28-30 degrees, 40 deg at daytime. Bring the usual camping gear, tent, 25 deg. sleeping bag, raingear and at least a 1.5 gallons of water. Bring your own food. Idea: Polish kielbasa roasted over fire on Friday night! Small print: turn off cell phone upon departure, subject to BWAC trip policy, pet and tobacco free trip, that's about it. Trip cost is $5 and because of the short notice, you need contact the crew leader for approval to register. Return to car after lunch on Saturday and back to TC by 2:30 pm or so.
