Object Oriented PHP - Beginner to Intermediate

Several new members have expressed an interest in learning Object Oriented Programming with PHP, so that's what we're going to do in June. I'll start with with an intro to OOP which will be good for those of you who have written procedural PHP but have only begun to look at OOP. The second half of the meeting will be for those of you who want to take your OOP skills to the next level.

We do serve food and drink so please be sure to RSVP if you're planning on coming and cancel your RSVP if you end up changing your mind. It helps us make sure we've got enough for everyone.

I look forward to seeing you there.

The videos for the meetup are now online. I've posted video for the Beginning OOP, Intermediate OOP and a bonus video for how static works in PHP which was recorded in between the talks. You can find all the videos and slides on the presentations page on the site: http://frontrangephp.org/presentations/

I was reminded to share this with everyone: http://www.phpweekly.com/

It's a weekly newsletter filled with recent news, articles, and tutorials about PHP. It's a great way to stay on top of what's new in the PHP community and there's a lot of good information for developers of any level.

This week's issue (http://www.phpweekly.com/archive/2013-06-20.html) also happens to mention a new book out from FRPUG's own Sam Hennessy about array filtering.

Thanks for sharing this, I was kicking myself for not asking you where to find this.

Great talk! I'm looking at how to securely abstract data from a database now with PHP. I think that's the next step. Also, about sanitizing data. Thanks Guys for a Introductory speech ;)

Great presentation by David. Refreshed my memory of OOP, showed me what I need to learn better, and some stuff that I don't know.

After the OOP presentation, I will be exploring this further. Another thing I have on my list to learn better is security and best practices.

I second that. I'd be interested in a series on security issues with practical examples.

Get there at 6:30 to chat a little. The talk will start at 7. They are normally 1 hour long. Then you are free to fly like the wind or stay and win prizes.

    • David S.

In this case, we've kind of got 2 talks, so I'd expect to be done around 8:30 to 8:45 depending on questions.

Is anyone interested in a presentation on Laravel? If so, what would you like to learn about it?

    May 31, 2013

    • Alan P.

Why Laravel? Strengths v. weaknesses. Scalability, community support, 1st party support, documentation, t utorials. Why/how is Laravel built with testing in mind, what advantages does that give me? Non-ORM Database options?

Thanks Alan. Many of the questions I have myself. Watch facebook for my blog posts that will go over these things as I discover them.

I try to write all OO code as far as PHP goes and would love to contribute if there are any questions needing answers.

    May 31, 2013

    • David S.

Chase, I'm sure we'll have time for discussion at the end of the presentation. I'll open the floor to whatever anyone wants to share as far as how they are using OOP.
