2013 March Photo Contest: Migration Madness

The theme for March is Migration Madness! Our February winner, Gwen Pina says the only qualification is images of birds or things that migrate! So your interpretation of what to include in the image is up to you, but the image must be of things that migrate!

The March contest will be open for entries beginning on Friday, March 1, 2013 and run until midnight Thursday, March 28, 2013.

So get out there and capture things that migrate. Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!

IMPORTANT CHANGE IN PROCEDURE

February marks one year since Teri and Kristal have been organizing The Front Range Photography Meetup. One year ago we decided to continue the tradition of the monthly photo contest. It has been fun watching it grow and become more popular each month.

We want to continue this tradition, but we want to give the contest more meaning and greater value to the participants. Starting this month we will no longer be voting for our favorite image. Instead we will have a well-qualified, Guest Judge choosing the images and awarding a 1st, 2nd Place and a few Honorable Mentions.

Our Guest Judges will be selected based on their professional photography experience. The Judge will critique our images, pointing out what is right or wrong in an effort to provide guidance for growth and development in our art.

We hope you are as excited about these changes as we are. We see this step as a positive move in the right direction for the Front Range Photography Meetup. We have a great group of people here who have expressed a desire to learn and improve. What better way to do that than to compete with others who have the same goal!

The March Guest Judge is Dan Ballard

Those who attended the Year End Contest and Pizza Party will remember Dan's wonderful presentation. Dan did a wonderful job of going through all of our images and pointing out ways to improve them. It was after this presentation, we decided to include Guest Judges in our monthly contest.

Dan Ballard travels the world taking remarkable images. He offers workshops, individual training and classes. To see examples of his work visit his website at Dan Ballard Photography.

A COUPLE OF SPECIAL NOTES:

YOU HAVE TO HAVE TAKEN THE IMAGE YOU ARE ENTERING: We know this should be obvious, but we just want to clarify this. So no restored photos, Photoshop compilations or creations etc.

YOU CANNOT ENTER A PHOTO THAT HAS BEEN ENTERED IN A PREVIOUS MONTHLY CONTEST AND WON 1ST OR 2ND PLACE! Again, we know this should be obvious, but just in case you were thinking about doing this, we have been keeping records of the Monthly Contest Winners for quite a few years.

PLEASE NOTE: If you paid your $10.00 contest fee to enter last month's contest YOU DON'T have to pay again to enter the monthly contests for the rest of the year.

IF YOU HAVEN'T paid to enter the contest, please be sure to do so BEFORE you enter your photo. (The payment link can be found on the left sidebar where it says "Contest Entry Fee. You don't need a Paypal account to pay, just a credit card.) If you don't pay, no worries, your image will just be flagged as exhibition only!

TO POST YOUR ENTRIES:

Click the "PHOTO" tab on the navigation bar at the top of the Meetup site.
In the "PHOTO" tab, there will be a PHOTO ALBUM titled "2013 March Photo Contest: "Migration Madness"
Upload your entry there
Don't forget to give it a creative title, or I will give it a generic one! LOL...much better if you name your image!
All submissions will be posted on this Meetup site. If you don't want your image online, please don't post it!

  This photo contest isn't a normal meetup where we actually meet somewhere. This one is just for posting your photos. That's why it doesn't have a location. There are many other meetups where we actually get together to take pictures.

  Shelley, this is not an "OFFICIAL MEETUP", so there is no location. We hold a Monthly Photo Contest, and post it as a Meetup so people can join and know the entry deadlines, criteria and theme. This month the theme for the contest is Migration Madness, everything is explained in the Meetup write-up. There is a cost of $10.00 a year to participate in the monthly contest, and that money goes towards prizes and our end of year party.

  Hi Cindy, We have not tried to run two contests. Others have suggested it, but here's the deal. Two of us (Teri & I) organize this site. It's a lot of work, we enjoy it, but we are also at the max of what we can do. We are volunteers, overworked volunteers! So if this is something you are serious about, perhaps volunteer to run it? ON the other side of the conversation, why? If your goals are to improve you should compete with those who are better than you. Otherwise you don't progress. I realize it's intimidating at first, but if you stretch yourself you will be amazed at how far you can reach! Go for it!

  John, that is comforting to know and I will try to keep it in mind. For myself personally, photography is a hobby, and if I try to continue to improve it on a constant basis, it will become a 4th job. So, I've been taking it in strides. It just seems a lot of people are on the "pro" level on here, and yes it is intimidating. Plus, I'm anti-photoshop for personal reasons, but mainly that's my style and what works for me. I do like the new idea of getting guest judges as it reduces the risk of favoritism and seeing who the runner-ups were is interesting/fun as well. Thank you both for your responses.

Welcome to the Front Range Photography Meetup! We are glad you joined!

The Front Range Photography Meetup organizes photo events in and around Metro Denver. Our purpose is to create fun photo activities where members can meet new friends, while learning and sharing as we go.

You will be notified of these events by email, or if you choose not to receive email you can log onto the site to view the calendar of events. (Email settings can be found under "My Profile." Please adjust them to your taste)

Fees
Membership in the Front Range Photography Group is FREE, however there are times when a fee is charged. If there is food or admittance fees involved you are responsible for them. Occasionally we travel greater distances to a special location. When that occurs, some folks prefer to organize a car pool and riders should be considerate of the driver and voluntarily contribute towards gas.

Monthly Online Contest FEE
Each month we host a Themed Contest. To enter this contest there is a Fee of $10/for the year. In December, we will host a Meetup where the winners of the monthly contest will receive a prize. This is a fun, low stress way to compete. We upload images to the Monthly Contest section under "Photos" then members vote on their favorites. Comments on images are welcome.

Workshops

In order to grow and get better at our craft, we occasionally offer workshops. Fees will be associated with these workshops and plainly announced, so you will be aware when a fee is involved.

A word about RSVP's
All Meetups require members to RSVP. Even though no fees are involved to attend, please be considerate of the Leaders. If you cannot attend, please make your RSVP reflect that.

Discussions
The Meetup site has a discussion section where you are encouraged to participate. This board is for announcing events, workshops, contests, seeking and providing advice. It is NOT to be used for spamming the group, MLM, personal interest announcements. Those will be promptly deleted with no warning. Repeat offenders will be cheerfully stoned in the town square and/or banned from the network.

Volunteers are Encouraged!
If you have a suggestion or would like to lead a Meetup, please contact us! We welcome members who are interested in leading a Meetup. You can plan it, and we will post it. Our goal is to have as many events as possible and we can't do it all alone! Don't be bashful, speak up!

Other Photography Clubs Welcome!
Since our name is Front Range, we would like to invite other Photography Clubs in the area to join this Meetup. If you are a member of a Club that would like to increased visibility for your events, please contact us. Together we can create an awesome network with activities in all corners of our region.

This group is sponsored and run by the Lone Tree Photography Club a Denver metro area group. We sponsor the Meetup because we are interested in growing our Club. If you would like to visit our Club, you are welcome to attend a couple meetings as our guest. Our meetings are held twice a month, an exhibition night and a presentation night.
