    Visions of Light – A Photographic Exhibition
    The Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts (TLCA) is pleased to announce a Call for Artists to participate in a juried photographic exhibition. Artists are invited to submit their fine art in photography for consideration.

    The mission of the 2013 VOL exhibition is to challenge photographers to go beyond producing a technically correct photographic image and demonstrate their use and/or control of light to help define the subject. The light can be natural, man-made, or a combination that enhances the impact, drama, emotion, composition, and/or message of the image. Please note that the show categories are different from the ones used last year and the ones used the year before and probably from the ones that will be used next year. The underlying theme behind each category is one’s vision, use or interpretation of light.

    2013 Show Judge – John Fielder
    The judge for the 2013 Visions of Light Photographic Exhibition will be Colorado’s most renowned photographer, John Fielder.  Mr. Fielder needs little introduction, his presence is visible all over Colorado from the Mountains to the Plains right down to the coffee table book in our homes!


    As a prominent preservationist, teacher, publisher, advocate and philanthropist for the arts, John will also be offering a Lecture and Workshop the week of the Opening. He will be spending 3-days with the  Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts during the Exhibition, offering a workshop and a slide illustrated lecture on design and light. Proceeds to benefit Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts.

    Special Event ~ Lecture and/or Sunrise Workshop with John Fielder

    This is your opportunity to learn landscape photography directly from John Fielder in the Palmer Lake area. Find out how John creates his award-winning images and gain a deeper understanding of the visual aspects of nature. There is a classroom session Thursday evening 6:30-9:00 featuring John's slide-illustrated lecture to get you thinking about design and light before you head into the field.

    We will head into the field Saturday morning around 7 for 3 hours of sunrise photography catching first light on the red rocks and landscapes in the Palmer Lake area, including at a private ranch.

    We use digital cameras only, point & shoot, or better yet, SLR. Appropriate for practiced beginner and intermediate photographers, workshop programs are designed to help students reach at least their next level of ability and enrollment is limited to ensure the highest quality experience.

    Most workshops are conducted with the assistance of a second professional landscape photographer so that everyone enjoys personal attention and no question is left unanswered.

    Visions of Light Photographic Exhibition Info:

    Acceptance and Judging Criteria
    The jury and the judges will use the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) guidelines for the 12 Elements of a Merit Print to make their image selections. All the elements of a “Merit Print” will be considered, but the selection process will place special emphasis on the element of light. The 12 Elements are used in this composition as an evaluating guide with the permission of the PPA. Judging will weigh heavily on the image and how it fits the category and how it meets the goals of the show. The presentation of the finished print reflects on the professionalism of the artist and will also be a consideration of the judging.

    February 4, 2013 – Notification of Acceptance mailed out
    March 2, 2013 – Deliver Artwork 1-4pm
    March 5 – March 30, 2013 – Exhibition Dates

    Categories of Entry

    • Landscape – Nature or Urban
    • Architecture – Manufactured, Constructed or Handmade
    • Wildlife and Nature – Naturally occurring flora and fauna
    • Abstract – Focus on form, line, color, design are more important than the nature of the subject.

    Awards
    There will be first and second place awards in each category and a Best of Show Prize. The best of show award will be $300. There will be $100 and $50 awards for First and Second Place in each category.

    Registration Fees

    • Early entry benefit – Submit your entry on or before January 1st and the fee is $35 for 4 entries, if received by midnight MST, January 1, 2013
    • $35 for 3 images, if received after midnight MST, January, 2013 and up to January 31st $10 for each additional entry up to a total of ten entries.
    • All fees are non-refundable.
    • Checks are to be made payable to the TLCA and mailed to PO Box 1154, Palmer Lake, CO 80133
    • Credit card information can be taken over the phone at[masked], or mailed with the registration form.

    Use Rights for Images
    By submitting images for the jury, the applicant grants artwork reproduction rights for current and future publicity purposes to the TLCA without compensation. Permission to include artwork in the exhibition catalog may be granted or withheld on the application form.

    Entry Rules
    All images must be submitted in digital format for consideration of this exhibit.

    • The jury and acceptance process will be based on the digital images submitted
    • Digital images may be submitted electronically to [masked] or burned to disc and mailed to TLCA P.O. Box 1154, Palmer Lake, CO 80133.
    • Images must be sized at 300 dpi, 1600 pixels on the long side, and saved in flattened JPG format.
    • Note this is larger than most show requirements so that we can use the same images for the show catalog.
    • Images must be submitted as 8-bit files.
    • Images will be viewed in s RGB color space.
    • Digital frames, titles, watermarks, or artist names may not be embedded in the images.
    • Files should be named with title of image-first initial last name.jpg, separated by a hyphen.
      (i.e., MyAwesomeImage-JSmith.jpg.)
    • Last day to receive electronic images or disc is Midnight, MST, January 31, 2013.
    • The exhibition is open to all photographers, both amateur and professional.

    Accepted Artwork

    • Entrants will receive notification of accepted/not accepted work via email by Feb. 10 or earlier, 2013.
    • Accepted Artwork must be received at the TLCA by March 2nd, 2013.
    • Shipped Artwork must be received at the TLCA between Febuary 25th March 2nd, 2013.
    • Hand delivered Artwork will be accepted at the TLCA between 1:00-4:00pm on March 2nd, 2013.
    • If you must reschedule, please call the TLCA AT[masked]-0475.
    • Shipped Artwork must be shipped in a re-usable packing container with a prepaid return address label.
    • Shipped Artwork must not contain peanut packing material.
    • All accepted images must be printed and framed or mounted in a professional manner with hanging wires. No clip mounts are allowed.
    • All accepted Artwork must be ready to hang with wire on back; no saw tooth hangers, clip mounts or missing wires.
    • The exterior dimensions of the finished work cannot exceed 1200 sq. inches.
    • Judging will be performed after all work is hung.
    • After the show, all artwork must be picked up between 11:00-1:00pm on March 31st, 2013
    • Shipped Artwork will be returned the week of April 13th, 2013.
    • All Artwork must remain on display for the duration of the show.
    • Received Artwork not meeting the above criteria will not be hung or judged.

    Insurance/Liability
    Submitted artwork will be protected and insured for up to $500 while in the care and custody of the TLCA, but not during transit to or from the show. TLCA is not responsible for artwork left after the pick up time. Artists are encouraged to consider their own insurance needs to protect their interests.

    Sales/Commissions

    • All artwork hanging in the show will be for sale.
    • The price established by the artist must include a 40% commission to the TLCA. If the artwork sells, the artist will receive 60% of the sale price. For artwork sold during the exhibition, the TLCA will send a check to the artist no later than May 1st, 2013.

    Restrictions

    • Images selected for TLCA exhibitions in the past are NOT eligible.
    • Images previously submitted for the VOL or other TLCA exhibitions, but not selected for the exhibition may be resubmitted for the VOL.
    • The VOL encourages the entry of current work to keep the exhibit fresh. However, there is no limitation on when a photograph was taken or when it was produced for the show.

    Every year the art center produces a show book through Blurb.com. The books are offered at no profit to the public and have won plaudits and have been used as a model by several galleries for their books.

    Hey another quick question, since I am new to this. I checked out the web site above to pay my entry online and was wondering if the Vision of Light contest is the same one you are are running? Your site says John Fielder will be judging the contest and the Tri-Lakes site says Kirkland photography. Also, there are differences between the admission price (35 vs 40) and the way to title the photographs. I want to make sure I am entering the right contest and following the correct format. Which set of instructions should I follow? Thanks so much.

      Trent, Here's your answer. The Tri-Lakes website is still showing last years information. The correct info for the 2013 is here on the Meetup site, with ONE exception. We are unable to accept payment yet, because the webmaster has not updated the Paypal info. Teri was so anxious to let everyone know about this event, she didn't want to wait until the "backend" was ready, so you will have to wait until the webmaster at Tri-Lakes is able to catch up.

      I'm going to make a note next to the payment section that it is not operable until next week (or so). Sorry for the confusion, but this part of the organizational piece is out of my control.

      Getting ready right now to submit before year-end it great. You get a better deal plus the potential to have more images in the exhibition.
