Due to thunder showers prediction we are postponing this trip til Sunday May 27 with an option to stay over and do 5 more miles on Monday! Sign up ASAP to reserve kayaks now since that will be Memorial Day weekend, and we will figure out carpooling.

We need to go up to Eljader, IA Sat. eve. May 26, which is a great town with excellent food. The Elkader Inn $(69) there (563) 245-2020.. There is also camping. I made reservations for everyone signed up as of Friday May 18. It will be Memorial Day weekend!!!

From Fairfield go north toward Cedar Rapids on 380 to the 151 exit just S. of CR. Go east then north on 151. It becomes 13 North to Manchester and Elkader. The Elkader Inn is a mile N. of downtown on the left. We will rendezvous there for breakfast, but try to make it to Shara's for a world class Algerian dinner Sat. eve about 7:30 PM!

Directions to Put it Sunday AM. We will pick up kayaks at Turkey River rentals in Elkader and caravan to the put in.

The put in is about 3 mi. West of Fayette go left on 93 about 2.5 miles to M ave. (gravel). Go about 1.5 mi. South to the bridge over the river kawaii, I mean Volga! Park by side of the road. Take out will be at Langemanns Ford, 2 miles east of Fayette on Hemlock Rd. We will shuttle a car down there before starting.

TOTAL MILES: 3 Hrs. Driving each way + approx 4.5 hrs. kayaking/day

$$$: $25 kayak rental or bring your own. Too shallow for canoes.

CARPOOLING: We suggest 10 cents/mile/person donation to your driver, but no one will be turned away for inability to pay. We assume no liability for volunteer drivers.

The Volga River is perhaps the best of Iowa’s scenic rivers. With limestone cliffs, deep forest, springs and many turns and small rapids, this relatively narrow river is one of the most fun in the Midwest. It can only be run in the spring, however.

If you don't have your own kayak, we will be renting them in Elkader, but we need to arrange a car top space to transport each kayak. Otherwise there is a $25 fee per boat per trip (put in and another $25 take out! PLEASE INDICATE IF YOU WILL NEED TO RENT a kayak!
