Topanga Lookout – Stunt High Loop

Details

This adventure is unique because it combines class 2.5 or 3 mountaineering with hiking. The loop is only 6.5 miles round trip while the elevation gain /loss is 1800’. The going may be a bit slow as we make our way along the undulating, brushy, knife-edge ridge but once we make it to the foundation of the long-abandoned Topanga Fire Lookout we can relax and take in the stupefying view, on a clear day all the way to San Jacinto over 100 miles to the east. It’s mostly downhill from here all the way back to our cars. You should allow at least 4 hours for this one.

For anyone interested, we can have lunch at the Rock Store after the hike, 30354 Mulholland Highway Cornell, CA.

Start Time: 8:00 am at the large turnout at mile-market 1.0 on Stunt Road.

Gear: Bring water (a good rule of thumb is ½ litre per hour), snacks, a hat and sunblock. Hiking shoes / boots are highly recommended on this trail. I use a walking stick but need to stow it for most of the climbing.

RSVPs a must.

Directions from the 101: Exit Las Virgenes Road and head south toward Malibu. Make a left turn on Mulholland Highway and follow it for 4 miles. Turn right onto Stunt Road and follow it for 1 mile. Park in the turn out on the right hand side at mile-marker 1.0. (Lat:34.09493 Lon:-118.64743)

Directions from PCH: Take Malibu Canyon Road/Las Virgenes Road north for 6.3 miles to Mulholland Highway. Turn right and follow it for 4 miles. Turn right onto Stunt Road and follow it for 1 mile. Park in the turn out on the right hand side at mile-marker 1.0. (Lat:34.09493 Lon:-118.64743)
