Malibu Creek State Park Walkabout

Details
This strenuous hike combines endurance and a butt kickin’ 1700’ elevation gain on the infamous Bulldog Motorway. Beginning in Tapia Park and cutting across to Malibu Creek State Park, we wend our way past Century Lake and the M.A.S.H site before the ascent. Once at the peak, it is mostly downhill on the Backbone Trail past Corral Canyon Road and Peak 2049 back to Malibu Canyon Road. Total distance is 14 ½ miles round trip with an overall elevation gain/loss of 2000’. You should plan on at least 6.5 hours for this one.
Start Time: 8:00 am at the dirt parking lot at the intersection of Malibu Canyon Road/Las Virgenes and Piuma Road. We will cross the street here to enter Tapia Park. If this corner lot is full, there is a fee parking lot on the other side of Malibu Canyon Road.
Gear: Bring a lot of water (a good rule of thumb is ½ litre per hour), a substantial lunch, snacks, a hat and sunblock. Hiking shoes / boots are highly recommended on this trail as are walking stick(s).
RSVPs a must.
Directions from the 101: Exit at Las Virgenes Road and drive south (toward the ocean). After you pass the main entrance to Malibu State Park on your right, look for Piuma Road on the left (and the Saddle Peak Lodge sign at the intersection). The pay lot is just ahead on your right and the free area is on your left at the corner.
Directions from PCH: Take Malibu Canyon Road north for 4.5 miles. The pay lot will be on your left before Piuma Road and the dirt parking on your right at the corner.
