Future of the Book presents an event with Goodreads

It's been awhile, but we are really thrilled to announce our next event - a presentation and discussion with the folks at Goodreads. Here's a little description of what you can expect:

What creates that magical moment when a reader decides to read a particular book? What makes them pluck a title out of the hundreds of thousands of books published each year and say "Yes"? Patrick Brown, Director of Author Marketing, and Brian Rosenblat, Director of Product at Goodreads will share highlights of what Goodreads is seeing in book discovery trends. They'll paint of picture of how serendipitous discovery works in the digital world and give insights into some of the top ways people find, share, and discuss books they love.

Want to talk, too?

This meetup is about exploring all aspects ofthe ongoing transformation of books, from cultural, professional, technical, and experiential points of view. We welcome fans, critics, innovators, and skeptics, as we bring some thought to where we are headed.

We would like to cultivate a sense of dialogue and group participation. So along with featured guests that we're inviting,we're encouraging presentations from members, with time for discussion. Let us know if you'd like to present!

6:00 -- Mingling and meeting (with pizza and refreshments graciously provided by our hosts, Goodreads)

7:00 -- Introductions

7:15 -- Brian and Patrick's Presentation

8-8:15 -- Group Member presentation (if we hear from you..!)

8:15 -- More mingling

As an author, I found this to be a helpful primer on how to reach and connect with readers. Thinking about how my time would probably be better spent on Goodreads, rather than other social media - as a writer, reader, and curious person.

Disappointing. It presented Goodreads as the only possible way forward in learning about books. It did not address the advertised topic.

Hi Patrick, Thanks for the feedback. Speaking just for myself as one of the organizers, I tend to look at the meetup as an ongoing thing, and its approach to "the future of the book" as not a one-night topic. The idea is that a bunch of varied inputs that occur over a bunch of meetings is the only way to arrive at an idea of something as broad as what is in store for the future of the book. Goodreads (and Kindle and Amazon) are certainly big players in this, though obviously not the only ones. I'd love to hear suggestions for topics you'd like to see covered and people who might be good at doing that.

The future f the book lies with GoodReads,CreateSpace, Kindle and ebooks in general, IMO as an author. Jon Foyt

Hello, I've been checking this meetup from time to time to see whether it had revived, and so it has! But, I didn't make the cutoff for the RSVPs for this evening's event. Is it worth turning up at the door anyway, in case there are no-shows? You don't seem to be running a waitlist. Thank you for doing this!

Lucy - definitely try to show up. I don't think there will be a problem with space - but possibly lack of seats and/or pizza!

Thanks for your reply, Promita. I made alternate plans already, but very sorry to miss this!

Hi All, I've come down with a pretty terrible cold/flu, so I won't be able to make it tonight.

I'm currently editing a number of what I call "intro-level" authors, and setting up a small publishing business while working on my own novels. I'm looking forward to hearing folks' thoughts on ebooks, the clash of publishing paradigms, what the Amazon-Goodreads merge means for indie authors, and, oh, lots of things!

Hi April, Candice, and Carol - Thanks so much for you interest in speaking. I think we are going to schedule our member presentations for another date because there will be a lot going at Wednesday's event. Let's talk on Wednesday and find a date that works, and maybe we can even do it in a panel format?
