A Mentorship Sharing Circle

The conversations that surfaced in our last meet up seemed to keep coming back to the idea of being our own clients, creating tangible products, and finding ways to monetize our artistic pursuits.

I'm going to invite some business development advisors to join us, and a few designers who have successfully made the leap.

We'll go around the room and air our personal concerns again and try to get some experts to weigh-in.

Should make for some amazing conversations, inspiration and synergies!

Hi guys, I really enjoyed participating in the conversations from the last Meet-up! I mentioned this website later in the evening:

    skillshare.com

There are so many amazing classes (and they aren't too expensive) taught by some super talented people. It would be a great opportunity to sharpen up our skillsets and re-inspire. Here are the classes that I really want to check out:

If you try out any classes, let me know how it goes!

Thanks to everyone for coming out and contributing to another great night of entertaining and informative conversation. Here's a few resources that came out of last night's conversation for you:

    http://www.print.io/
    – DNY Design (Still searching for the right URL)
    – Where Good Ideas Come From - by Steven Johnston
    http://amzn.to/1vkHCj9
    http://www.chorewars.com/

The next event will likely be in January… After that, we'll reassess and think about doing them more often (if there is an apatite for it).

Please feel free to add in the details that I know I missed.

    Cheers,

Good to see everyone too. It's great to hear about and learn from other perspectives in the design community. BTW Kevin, I think 6pm is okay, if I am running late, no big whoop.

As I go through my daily routine today, other subjects came into my mind such as:
    - file backup/management
    - password management
    - computer viruses and vulnerabilities (such as this new bash vulnerability with MacOSX)
    - discuss if/how each person has expanded on design since last meeting (no pressure, just like to hear what has inspired other people)
    - and on that note, what inspires each person? What is their process in getting out of a design block?

    Cheers, Karen

Thanks for coming out again Karen! I'm really liking this new format… though I suspect things will evolve over time again.
I'm thinking you should take a turn kicking off the conversation at the next one… Are you game?

      October 3

    • Karen C.

Sure, I could give it a try.

Kevin, have room for one more? I had a conflict for this evening but it has been resolved! Let me know if I can squeeze in.

    Cheers!

Hey Kevin. Did you know there are two other meetups in Winnipeg on this same evening?

    http://www.meetup.com/Winnipegs-Search-Engine-Bullies/events/204764402/

I found out because I was compiling my list of upcoming learning events: http://bernardic.ca/upcoming-software-development-learning-events-winnipeg/

Thanks for the heads up Dan, I don't think those guys will be losing attendees because of us (and vice versa). Based on your experience at the last Embark, I think you'll agree, we're targeting a different audience than those guys are. ;-)

Oh, interesting. I was imagining... A designer who works with the web and perhaps wants to start own business, needs a website that delivers customers and converts, and uses Android on one of her devices.

We decided to move the event to Oct 2nd because I unwittingly scheduled Embark on the same night as Secret Handshake. We have a lot of people in both groups so this seemed to make the most sense. Sorry for any inconvenience.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
