World Classic and Modern Literature
Creative and Essay Writing for High School
We will study some of the world's great literature from all regions of the world, from ancient to modern day. Ancient Greece/Rome, Egypt/Africa, Persia/Middle East, and India are covered during the fall semester. (East Asia, Europe, and Latin America are covered in the spring.) We will read classic tales, myths, poems, plays, speeches, essays, modern short stories, and classic novels. Through discussion, students will learn literary analysis. Students will also master the 5 paragraph essay, going through the entire writing process. Essays will include all 4 types: argumentative, expository, personal narrative, and descriptive. Creative writing assignments are optional. Each class consists of a short lecture, discussion of the readings, and an activity such as writing techniques (organization, enrichment, brainstorming, tackling writer's block, creativity) and literary games such as character interviews and mock debates or journalistic compilations. No textbook purchase is required. All novels are readily accessible through the public library.
