Jesper Richter-Reichhelm - ElasticSearch FTW
Abstract
What would you do if you knew exactly what kind of service you need to solve a specific problem, but it simply doesn’t exist? Two years ago we had this exact problem: we needed a service to handle exceptions and crashes of mobile games but not one service on the market was useful to handle ops really well. Not sure how you would decide, but our solution was to start building our own service to solve that problem.
Along the way we iterated a lot. Those iterations involved relational databases that didn’t scale, overly complex Erlang code that no one could ever understand (or fix!) and the attempt to use the hippest React and ES6 stuff in a team, that was not prepared to handle it.Guess what? We struggled! Luckily we had also added ElasticSearch to our set-up and noticed, that this was actually the only thing we actually really needed. So we radically simplified our setup and since two years now ElasticSearch is the "backend" for the error reporting for all our games, that are played by millions of live users. And it simply works.
In this talk I will tell you the whole story, how our service looks today and what lessons we've learned while building it.
